ENGINE COWLING -THRUST REVERSER HOLD-OPEN RODS
The thrust reverser (T/R) hold-open rods keep the T/R halves open for maintenance. The hold-open rods are also a safety device. They protect persons at work on the engine or the T/R from injury. They prevent the accidental closure of the T/R.
Thrust Reverser Hold-Open Rods
The T/R has four hold-open rods. Each T/R half has a forward and an aft hold-open rod. The rods are telescopic. The forward hold-open rod stows on the forward bulkhead of the torque box. The aft hold-open rod stows on the inner wall of the T/R.
Each hold-open rod has a locking collar. The locking collars lock the hold-open rods in place. When the hold open rod locks, you can see the yellow stripe next to the collar. When you can see the red stripe next to the collar, the hold-open rod is not locked.
Each hold-open rod has a receiver fitting on the engine. The receiver fitting for the forward hold-open rod is on the engine fan case next to the oil tank. The receiver fitting for the aft hold-open rod is on the turbine case.
To use the hold-open rods, you must first open the T/R half part way, then rotate the forward hold-open rod up and attach it to its receiver fitting. You can then continue to open the T/R half. When the forward hold-open rod locks, you can rotate the aft hold-open rod forward and attach it to its receiver fitting.
Training Information Point
WARNING: MAKE SURE THE HOLD-OPEN ROD COLLARS ARE LOCKED AND THE YELLOW STRIPES ARE VISIBLE BEFORE YOU GO UNDER THE THRUST REVERSER.
WARNING: NEVER STAND UNDER THE THRUST REVERSER HALVES WHEN YOU OPEN AND CLOSE THE THRUST REVERSER.

ENGINE COWLING -TURBINE EXHAUST
The turbine exhaust system makes the airflow smooth as it goes out of the engine. This increases engine efficiency and decreases noise.
Load Share Ring Assembly
The load share ring assembly goes on the engine between the turbine exhaust case and the turbine exhaust sleeve. The load share latch straps attach to the top part of the ring.
Turbine Exhaust Sleeve
The turbine exhaust sleeve is aft of the thrust reverser. The turbine exhaust sleeve attaches to the turbine exhaust case. The bolts that attach the sleeve to the case also go through the load share ring assembly.
