You use the multifunction control display unit (MCDU) to control the operation of the ACARS and to show ACARS messages.
The ACARS aircraft personality module (APM) identifies the airplane.
The ACARS CMU receives the ground-to-air digital messages (uplink) and controls the transmission of the air-to-ground digital messages (downlink).
ACARS connects to these components of other systems:
-VHF transceiver #3 to transmit to and receive data from the ground. -Proximity switching unit sends door status, parking brake set, and air/ground sense. (737-700 ONLY) -Misc solid-state switching module sends discrete signals for out, off, on and in (OOOI) events. (737-300/500 ONLY) -E11 sends discrete signals for parking brake set and air/ground sense. (737-300/500 ONLY)
-Flight management computer can supply the ACARS with aircraft position, fuel quantity, software load, and uplink flight plans to the FMC or down link flight plans from the FMC.

The ACARS is a data communication system to manage flight plan data and maintenance data between the airplane and the airline.
These are the components of the ACARS:
