2 Determining Competence
2.1 Requirement Students must achieve a level of competence determined by the CAA.
2.2 Acceptable Means of Compliance
2.2.1 In order to successfully complete an approved course of initial training a student must reach the required minimum acceptable levels of ability and knowledge in all the Performance Objectives sub-topics, as detailed in the relevant Part of CAP 624.
2.2.2 Assessors shall collate the assessment reports for practical exercises and determine the result as satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
2.2.3 A student who does not achieve a satisfactory practical assessment has failed the course.
2.2.4 A student shall be entitled to two attempts at a written or verbal assessment.
2.2.5 A student who does not achieve a satisfactory assessment after two consecutive attempts at a written or verbal assessment shall have failed the course.
2.2.6 A student who has failed a course may undertake a second attempt at the course and shall be required, as a minimum, to complete that part of the approved course from the last assessment where the student was assessed as satisfactory. If a period of more than six months has elapsed since the date of failure, the training provider shall carry out an assessment of the student's retained knowledge and skills and, if necessary, require the student to commence training at an earlier point in the course.
2.2.7 A student unsuccessful at a second attempt at a course shall be required to undertake any subsequent courses in full.
2.2.8 If, during initial training, a period of more than six months separates the successful completion of basic training and the commencement of the first rating training course, the training provider shall carry out an assessment of the student's retained knowledge and skills and, if necessary, require the student to carry out a period of refresher training before commencing rating training.
