1.2.5  Each course or module of a rating course shall contain at least one practical, one written and one verbal assessment.
1.2.6  The practical assessment exercises are part of the teaching process in that detailed feedback is given to the students. Where only one practical assessment is undertaken on a course or module, training providers should provide a formal method of reviewing progress with the student prior to the practical assessment.
1.2.7  The practical assessment at the course exit level shall comprise a minimum of five summative exercises, all of which a student must complete.
1.2.8  Practical assessments at intermediate points of a course, or at the end of short modules, may be undertaken according to the requirements of paragraph 1.2.7 above or by continuous assessment.
1.2.9  Training providers shall not permit students to practice assessment exercises which they are about to undertake.
1.2.10  A report shall be written for each exercise that forms part of the practical assessment.
1.2.11  The student must be made aware of the areas to be assessed and the standards to be reached for each assessment.
1.2.12  If advice or help is given during an assessment exercise, the assistance provided should be fully described in the report. The description must be sufficient to enable the assessor to judge the impact on the exercise of the advice or help given.
1.2.13  All results must be attributed to the assessors and verifiers who mark the student's performance.
1.2.14  Any student failing to attend a scheduled assessment shall be deemed unsatisfactory unless the verifier is satisfied that there was just cause for the absence, in which case the assessment may be re-scheduled.
1.2.15  Students presenting themselves for an assessment or summative exercise shall be deemed fit to take the assessment.
1.2.16  Assessments undertaken in respect of knowledge acquired from distance-learning courses shall be carried out under supervised conditions at the training provider's premises.


2  Determining Competence
2.1  Requirement Students must achieve a level of competence determined by the CAA.
2.2  Acceptable Means of Compliance
2.2.1  In order to successfully complete an approved course of initial training a student must reach the required minimum acceptable levels of ability and knowledge in all the Performance Objectives sub-topics, as detailed in the relevant Part of CAP 624.
2.2.2  Assessors shall collate the assessment reports for practical exercises and determine the result as satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
2.2.3  A student who does not achieve a satisfactory practical assessment has failed the course.
2.2.4  A student shall be entitled to two attempts at a written or verbal assessment.
2.2.5  A student who does not achieve a satisfactory assessment after two consecutive attempts at a written or verbal assessment shall have failed the course.
2.2.6  A student who has failed a course may undertake a second attempt at the course and shall be required, as a minimum, to complete that part of the approved course from the last assessment where the student was assessed as satisfactory. If a period of more than six months has elapsed since the date of failure, the training provider shall carry out an assessment of the student's retained knowledge and skills and, if necessary, require the student to commence training at an earlier point in the course.
2.2.7  A student unsuccessful at a second attempt at a course shall be required to undertake any subsequent courses in full.
2.2.8  If, during initial training, a period of more than six months separates the successful completion of basic training and the commencement of the first rating training course, the training provider shall carry out an assessment of the student's retained knowledge and skills and, if necessary, require the student to carry out a period of refresher training before commencing rating training.
