be improved – super-detailed airports,
specialised cockpit systems, flight
planners and so on. These are available as
boxed software on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
or by download over the Internet.
The existence of add-ons shouldn’t
suggest that Flight Simulator itself is
somehow lacking. Out of the box it’s
an amazing program for the price, but
it obviously can’t include a perfect
representation of every feature its
users might want!
Freeware refers to add-ons which are
created by enthusiasts for others to share
– and are totally free! Many are of the
highest quality and numerous websites
host libraries of freeware aircraft, airports
and other programs which you can
download and enjoy perfectly legally!
No one would ever claim that simulated
aviation can equal the real flight
experience but, given the constraints of
a home PC set-up, today’s simulations
are impressively realistic. A real-world
pilot can now practise a flight using
accurate representations of departure and
destination airports, flying over scenery
featuring actual photographs of the terrain
below, following navigation aids in their
correct positions, and encountering the
same real-time weather conditions as
exist along the route. Indeed, many pilots
do just this.
Regular reviews of flight simulation
software in the mainstream aviation
press, and the number of pilots now
involved in helping to develop these
programs, prove that flight simulation has
progressed well beyond what might be
considered a game.
