The computers we all use on a daily basis
are capable of letting us enjoy virtual
aviation and, more recently, rail simulation
in a way that was unimaginable only a
few years ago. A good home PC and
some reasonably priced software are all
we need to immerse ourselves – with
an exceptional degree of realism – in
activities which would otherwise be
completely inaccessible.
Flight simulation provides, quite literally,
a whole new world for you to explore, in
whatever aircraft you might choose to fly,
and Microsoft’s Flight Simulator program
remains an amazing and adaptable
platform for our software. While rail
simulation cannot match the practically
limitless environment available to virtual
aviation enthusiasts, the detail and
complexity of the latest simulations show
nonetheless that a remarkably authentic
experience is now available.
Our software in these pages has been
developed to expand and enhance the
major simulation programs and above all
to provide a heightened sense of realism
and immersion. We trust that returning
customers will enjoy this latest look at
some of our recent add-ons, and hope
that those of you who are new to these

Basic familiarity with the day-to-day
functioning of a modern PC is all that is
required to enjoy PC flight simulation.
You will need a reasonably powerful
PC, but most modern systems running
Windows XP or Vista will do the job
admirably. It’s worth noting, however,
that laptops and some machines designed
primarily for business use may not
be equipped with a suitably powerful
graphics card.
Getting airborne requires only a minimum
of equipment and software. By far the
best flight simulation program in terms
of performance, value and popularity is
Microsoft’s Flight Simulator, which has
been available in various versions for
some 25 years. Flight Simulator X is the
latest version, which really is a fantastic
program and incredibly good value.
A joystick (with throttle, rudder controls
and various button assignments) is
perfectly adequate for enjoyable flying,
but a yoke and rudder pedals will better
replicate the sensation of handling a real
aircraft. A suitable joystick shouldn’t cost
any more than £50 and a good quality
yoke and rudder pedals can be bought for
around £200.
Flight Simulator will work perfectly offline,
but fast Internet access does provide
genuine benefits for simulated flying.
