If a short circuit occurs, the protection system opens
the GLC and confirms the BTC opening. The generator
is still excited. The GEN1 FAULT light comes on.
If the fault does not persist, the short circuit has
been isolated and the GCR is tripped thus the generator
is de-excited.
In this case, the BTC remains open and is locked out,
and the AC BUS 1 supply cannot be recovered. The AC
ESSential Bus supply is recovered through the AC ESS
FEED control.
The system is recovered by resetting the protection
system from the associated GEN pushbutton. Two reset
actions maximun can be performed.
The Generator Control Relay (GCR) closes enabling
generator excitation. The Power Ready relay is
re-energized to control the Generator Line Contactor
closing.
The Bus Tie Contactor lock out function is removed.
The DP Counter is reset either by pressing the DP Reset
pushbutton on the front face of the GCU or at each
power-up.

The GCR and PR relays are deenergized by the Protection
module which processes various electrical parameters
necessary for the protection functions.
Note that the overload protection is only processed
to give warning on the ECAM. In underspeed conditions
the Under-Frequency and the Under-Voltage protections
are inhibited.
If the GLC remains closed (welded contact) after
tripping of the PR relay, the BTC lock-out function
is activated.

INDICATIONS AND WARNINGS
IDG indications and warnings are computed by the GCU.
The warnings and indications triggered are:
- generator “FAULT” amber warning light with ECAM
activation
- galley “FAULT” amber warning light with ECAM
activation
- IDG “FAULT” amber warning light with ECAM
activation.
The GCU also processes the following indications:
- generator load, frequency, IDG oil
temperature and low pressure which are also
displayed on the ECAM system.

BITE
The GCU contains an integral BITE system to help in
system trouble shooting.
The BITE system detects and isolates active and passive
failures.
The BITE system consists of two sections:
- Operational BITE
- Maintenance BITE
After generator tripping, the operational BITE
identifies the protection, analyses the conditions and
determines the fault origin.
The Maintenance BITE completes the operational BITE
and performs a self-test of the GCU to provide an
indication of system integrity. Only the 7 last leg
faults are kept in the non volatile memory.
