Chapter -6 AIRFIELD REQUIREMENT FOR CAT II / III A/B Page 50
6.3.2. Runway centerline markings.
These are uniformly spaced stripes along the centerline
- At 50 m to 75 m intervals.
-
Of width not less than 0.9 m for CAT-II/III runways
-
Of length equal to gap between stripes (1/2 interval) but not less than 30 m
6.3.3. Threshold markings.
These are a pattern of uniform longitudinal stripes disposed symmetrically about the runway centre line. For runway of width 45 m. a total of 12 stripes with 6 on either side are marked, each of
-Length of at least 30 m
-
Width approximately 1.8 m
-
With approximate lateral gap of 1.8 m
-
extending to 27 m either side
or to within 3 m of the runway edge
6.3.4. Touchdown zone markings.
A touchdown zone marking consists of pairs of rectangular markings symmetrically disposed about the runway centre line at longitudinal spacing of 150 m beginning from the threshold and extending to 900 m from threshold. Each rectangle marking is at least 22.5 m long and 3 m wide. Distance coding may be incorporated by set of stripes having 3, 2, 1 stripes on either side of centerline in place of single rectangle.

6.3.5. Taxi-holding position markings.
Taxi-holding position markings at the intersection of taxiways with CAT-II/III runways are as per pattern shown in Annexure 14. On either side of taxi-holding position sign boards marked “CAT-II” or “CAT-III” as applicable must be positioned. Where CAT-II or III holding position is located on an area where it would exceed 60 m in length, the term “CAT II” or “CAT III” are marked on the surface at equal interval of 45 m between successive marks.
6.4. VISUAL AIDS – LIGHTING REQUIREMENT
For precision approach Category II & III runways the following lights are provided:
-
runway threshold lights
-
runway end lights
-
runway edge lights
-
runway centre line lights
-touchdown zone lights
-approach lights
-taxiway centre line lights
-stop bars
-taxi-holding position lights. Approach lights are mandatory for a CAT-II runway and recommendatory for a CAT-III runway. Taxiway centre line lights are provided for use in RVR conditions less than 400 m, except where there is a low volume of traffic and guidance from taxiway edge lights and markings is considered adequate.
6.4.1. Runway Edge Lights.
These are placed in two parallel rows along the full length of
runway at not more than 3 m. distance beyond the runway
edges. They are uniformly spaced at 60 m max spacing.
The lights are of variable WHITE colour. For the last 600 m.
