TURBINE EXHAUST SYSTEM -TURBINE EXHAUST PLUG

General

The turbine exhaust plug makes the inner contour of the collector/nozzle.
Physical Description
These two parts make the turbine exhaust plug:

Aft turbine exhaust plug

*
Forward turbine exhaust plug.

 

The forward and aft exhaust plugs are made of titanium alloy.
The turbine exhaust plug is aft of the thrust reverser. Thirty two bolts attach the forward plug to the turbine exhaust case (T1 flange of the engine). Thirty-two bolts attach the forward plug and aft plug together.
EFFECTIVITY BEJ ALL
The forward and aft exhaust plugs are a matched set when fabricated. The forward and aft plugs will show the words ‘‘MATCHED SET -DO NOT SEPARATE’’, the part number, serial number, manufacturer’s code and the date of manufacture. This data is etched in the interior surface of the forward plug, between the stiffener and the forward bolt flange. This data is also etched in two places on the aft plug; between the stiffener and forward bolt flange in the interior surface, and on the exterior surface forward of the end cap. It has been found that the etched data can become worn off and you can not see the data. Later forward and aft plugs have a identification plate riveted inside each plug. These plates have the words ‘‘MATCHED SET -DO NOT SEPARATE’’, the part number and a serial number.
On early turbine exhaust plugs, the aft plug has countersunk holes and the countersunk bolts thread into self-locking nut plates in the forward plug. In-service, it was found the countersunk holes in the aft plug would become oval and the countersunk bolt to pull out of the hole or shear the head of the bolt off. The exhaust airflow can catch the edge of an aft plug if the aft plug is not part of the matched set. The aft plug could separate from the forward plug.
On later turbine exhaust plugs, both delivered plugs and plugs with a retrofit service bulletin have thirty-two, large bolts with 12 point bolthead which replaced the countersunk bolts. These bolts thread into self-locking nut plates in the forward plug.
