Pickup  Move one material into or on the surface of a different one that  BurrGall
touches it, usually its a cause of friction-heating.  ImbedmentInclusion Pile-up Protrusion
 Metallization
Pinched  Distortion of the surfaces of  Bound
the parent material, caused by pressure.  CompressedFlattened Seized
Smashed (without separation in pieces) Squashed Squeezed
Pit  A small hole that does not have  Corrosion
sharp, high-stress corners in the surface of the material. Pits are usually caused by a chemical reaction (rusting, chemical corrosion).  CraterElectrolytic cavityInclusionPerformationPinholes Pock-marked
Porosity  Areas that contain many pits or pinholes.  PitPinholes
Rub  A surface that is pushed in or moved is caused by two surfaces that move while they touch each other.  If impression isshallow and smooth, see "Wear"; ifimpression is sharp, see "Scratch".

Scale  A layer of metallic oxides that forms by a chemical action of oxygen on the outside surface of the metal, usually while hot. Burn
Scratch  A long, thin, sharp-cornered impression caused by a sharp object that moves across the surface of the parent material.  AbrasionChafeFurrowGroove Score
Seizure  A welding or binding of faces prevents more movement.  Bound upFrozen Tight Wedged Welded (without external heating)
Shingling  A condition when one fan blade mid-span shroud moves on the other (usually when something hits the fan). The condition can also occur to the blade tip shrouds on the LPT rotor (Stg. 3 and 4). The condition on the LPT is usually caused by a pre-twist that is not there, too much radial movement, etc. Bound upShingledWedged
Spalling  Small particles of metal that crack or flake off of the surface, usually in thin layers or specific spots. FlakingFrettingGalling
Unbalance  When you put a balanced component out of balance. Usually "imbalance".
Varnish film  A hard surface-film of not fully carbonized hydrocarbon, such as oil, which is built up when the part is heated to or above the breakdown-point of the fluid. BandedDiscoloredOxidizedStained
