Burn A fast, destructive, oxidizing effect, usually caused by higher temperatures than the parent material can go through. Change in color usually shows this condition. Burn out (missingpiece)ErosionCorrosionGutteredHeat-check
Heat deterioration
Hole (burn) Hot spot Overheated
Oxidation
Burnishing To make a metal surface smooth with a mechanical action, but without a decrease in material. RubWear
Usually you will find it on a plain bearing surface. It is possible to see surface discoloration around the outer
edges. Usual burnishing that is caused by operational service is not dangerous if the coverage approximates the load it carries and there is no
evidence of burns.
Burr A rough edge or a sharp point on the edge or surface of the parent material.
Chafing See "Gall" or "Scratch".
Chip An edge that breaks away from the parent material, usually caused by a hit from an unwanted object. BreakNick (similar to Chip, but you do not removematerial) Notched spalling (usually a broken-away flat surface)
Corrosion A mass of small pits which cumulatively cause a large, shallow hole (usually rough in the surface of the parent material). Pit

Crazing A mesh of small thin cracks found in the glazed or baked-on layered surfaces, usually caused by a temperature change or by deformation of parent metal. The cracks do not go into the parent metal.

Definition
A twist, bend or permanent strain that causes a shape not to be aligned or change of shape.
A surface that wears away slow and continuously is caused by a fluid (gas or liquid) that flows on the surface. Wear is usually caused by fine particles of unwanted material entrained in hot engine gases that flows at a high velocity.
The step by step fracture of a material with a load from a cyclic stress.
See "Spalling".
Parts that wear away with low amplitude that rubs against a different metal (usually related to a press fit or close fitting parts).A defect caused by two surfaces that move and touch. In most cases, a quantity of unwanted material is left on the parent material.
