(5) Remove the lock bolt from the journal
bearing.
Refer to Figure 2
(6) Compress the journal bearing unit inwards.
(7) Release the journal bearing unit from the
fuselage bearings.
WARNING: DO NOT STAND UNDER THE NOSE LANDING GEAR STRUT
WHEN REMOVING THE UNIT. THE ASSEMBLY IS HEAVY AND
MAY CAUSE HARM AND INJURY TO PERSONNEL.
(8) Carefully remove the nose gear strut from
the airplane in a downward direction.

C. Install the Nose Landing Gear Strut
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items
WARNING: USE PROPER PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT WHEN
HANDLING CORROSION PROTECTION AND GREASE. THESE
CHEMICALS WHEN MAKE CONTACT MAY IRRITATE OR CAUSE
DAMAGE TO SKIN.
(1) Preparation:
− Liberally apply corrosion protection to
these items:
− The inside of the journal assembly
− The shank of the lock bolt.
− Apply a light coat of grease to the teflon
bushes.
Use LPS-3.
Clean corrosion inhibitor from the threads
Use Aeroshell grease 5.
(2) Put the nose gear strut in position in the
airplane from below.
Compress the journal bearing unit against
the spring.
(3) Expand the journals of the unit to engage the
bearings in the fuselage.
Refer to Figure 2
(4) Install the lock bolt in the journal bearing
unit.
(5) Install the shock absorber assembly to the
nose landing gear strut as follows:
− Apply a light corrosion protection on
strut pins and clip retainers
− Install the shock absorber assembly
using the strut pins
− Install the clip retainers and secure
with rivets.
Refer to Figure 2
Use Mastinox (6856K).
Clean corrosion excess
Use vinyl hammer to secure strut pins.
(6) Adjust the nose wheel steering friction. Refer to paragraph 4
(7) Remove the trestle from the front fuselage.
(8) Lower the nose wheel to the floor. Remove the weights from the rear
fuselage.
(9) Install the engine cowling. Refer to Chapter 71-10

3. Remove/Install the Shock Absorber Assembly

B. Remove the Shock Absorber Assembly
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items
(1) Use weights to hold the rear fuselage down
with the nose wheel clear of the ground.
Use a strap around the rear fuselage.
(2) Put a padded trestle under the front fuselage
just aft of the nose gear mounting.
(3) Remove the engine cowling. Refer to Chapter 71-10
WARNING: SUPPORT THE NOSE LANDING GEAR PRIOR TO REMOVAL OF
THE UNIT. FAILURE TO SUPPORT THE ASSEMBLY WILL
DAMAGE THE EQUIPMENT AND MAY CAUSE HARM OR INJURY
TO PERSONNEL.
(4) Disconnect the shock absorber assembly
from the engine mount as follows:
− Disconnect the lockwire
− Remove bolt, washer, and nut.
One personnel should hold the nose
landing gear strut. Refer to Figure 2
(5) Remove shock absorber assembly from the
nose landing gear strut as follows:
− Remove the rivets. Discard the rivets
− Remove two clip retainers
− Remove the strut pins.
Use slide hammer in removing the strut
pins.
(6) Disassemble the shock absorber assembly.
− Remove rod end bearing and nut
− Remove self-locking nut, washer, and
rubber damper
− Remove shock absorber retainer,
9-spacers, and 10-rubber dampers
If necessary, use heat to break the
adhesive.
Carefully remove the spring pin using a drill
or a 10-32 pulling screw. Discard spring
