− The main bus supplies power to the ignition switch.
− The ignition switch gives a positive supply to the starter relay.
− The starter relay energizes. The relay contacts close.
− The start light comes on.
− The starter solenoid energizes. This moves the starter pinion to engage the crankshaft gear.
− The contacts in the solenoid close to complete the power circuit to the starter motor.
− The motor turns the engine.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the engine starting system. If you have the
trouble detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the
repair in the Repair column.
Trouble Possible Cause Repair
The starter motor will not
operate.
The airplane battery voltage is
low.
Do a battery voltage check.
Charge or replace the battery.
Starter switch circuit defective. Do a continuity test. See
Chapter 92 for circuit diagram

Interlock.
Starter motor malfunction. Refer to the Teledyne
Continental Motors
Maintenance Manual.
The starter motor rotates but
does not turn the crankshaft.
Starter motor drive train
malfunction.

The starter motor rotates
slowly.
The airplane battery voltage is
