Elodie Roux. Septembre 2003
Subpart F : Equipment
33.2 Instruments : Installation
FAR 23.1311 : Electronic display instrument systems.
(a)
[Electronic displayindicators, including those with features that make isolation and independence between powerplant instrument systems impractical, must :

(1)
Meet the arrangement and visibility requirements of Sec. 23.1321.

(2)
Be easily legible under all lighting conditions encountered in the cockpit, in-cluding direct sunlight, considering the expected electronic display brightness level at the end of an electronic display indictor’s useful life. Speci.c limita-tions on display system useful life must be contained in the Instructions for Continued Airworthiness required by Sec. 23.1529.

(3)
Not inhibit the primary display of attitude, airspeed, altitude, or powerplant parametersneededby anypilottosetpowerwithin establishedlimitations,in any normal mode of operation.

(4)
Not inhibit the primary display of engine parameters needed by any pilot to properly set or monitor powerplant limitations during the engine starting mode of operation.

(5)
Have an independent magnetic direction indicator and either an independent secondary mechanical altimeter, airspeedindicator, and attitudeinstrument or individual electronicdisplayindicatorsforthealtitude, airspeed, and attitude that are independent from the airplane’s primary electrical power system. These secondary instruments may be installed in panel positions that are displacedfrom theprimarypositions speci.edbySec.23.1321(d),but mustbe located wherethey meetthepilot’s visibility requirements ofSec.23.1321(a).

(6)
Incorporate sensory cues for the pilot that are equivalent to those in the ins-trument being replaced by the electronic display indicators.

(7)
Incorporate visual displays of instrument markings, required by Secs. 23.1541 through 23.1553, or visual displays that alert the pilot to abnormal operatio-nal values or approaches to established limitation values, for each parameter required to be displayed by this part.

(b)
The electronic display indicators, including their systems and installations, and considering other airplane systems, must be designed so that one display of in-formation essential for continued safe .ight and landing will remain available to the crew, without needforimmediate actionby anypilotfor continued safe opera-tion, after any singlefailure orprobable combination offailures.

(c)
Asusedinthissection, ”instrument” includesdevicesthatarephysically contained in one unit, anddevices that are composed of two or morephysically separate units or components connected together(such as a remoteindicatinggyroscopicdirection indicatorthatincludes amagneticsensing element, agyroscopicunit, anampli.er, and an indicator connected together). As used in this section, ”primary” display refers to the display of a parameter that is located in the instrument panel such that the pilot looks at it .rst when wanting to view that parameter.]

FAR 23.1321 : Arrangement and visibility.
(a) Each .ight, navigation, and powerplant instrument for use by any required pilot during takeo., initial climb, .nal approach, and landing must be located so that anypilot seated atthecontrolscanmonitortheairplane’s .ightpath and theseins-truments with minimum head and eye movement. The powerplant instruments for these .ight conditionsarethoseneeded tosetpowerwithinpowerplantlimitations.
(b)
For each multiengine airplane, identical powerplant instruments must be located so as to prevent confusion as to which engine each instrument relates.

(c)
Instrument panel vibration may not damage, or impair the accuracy of, any instru-ment.

(d)
[Foreachairplane, the .ightinstrumentsrequiredbySec.23.1303,and,asapplicable, bythe operatingrules ofthis chapter, mustbegrouped ontheinstrumentpanel and centered as nearly as practicable about the vertical plane of each required pilot’s forward vision. In addition :]
