Compliancewith subparagraph(1) ofthisparagraph mustbeshownby test unless experience with similarbatteries andinstallationshas shown that main-taining safe cell temperatures andpressurespresents noproblem.

(3)
No explosive or toxic gases emitted by any battery in normal operation, or as the result of any probable malfunction in the charging system or battery installation, may accumulateinhazardousquantities withinthe rotorcraft.

(4)
No corrosive .uids or gases that may escape from the battery may damage surrounding structures or adjacent essential equipment.

(5)
Each nickel cadmium battery installation capable of being used to start an engine orauxiliarypowerunit musthaveprovisionstopreventanyhazardous e.ect on structure or essential systems that may be caused by the maximum amount ofheatthebattery cangenerateduring a short circuit of thebattery or of its individual cells.

(6)
[Nickelcadmium battery installations capable of being used to start an engine or auxiliarypower unit musthave–

(i)
A system to control the charging rate of the battery automatically so as to prevent battery overheating;

(ii)
A battery temperature sensing and over-temperature warning system with a means for disconnecting the battery from its charging source in the event of an over-temperature condition; or

 

 


(iii) Abatteryfailure sensingand warning system with a meansfordisconnec-

FAR 29.1355 : Distribution system.

(a)
The distribution system includes the distribution busses, their associated feeders, and each control and protective device.

(b)
[If two independent sources ofelectrical power for particular equipment or systems are requiredby this chapter,in the event of the failure of onepower sourcefor such equipment orsystem, anotherpowersource(including its separatefeeder) mustbe providedautomatically orbe manually selectabletomaintainequipmentorsystem operation.]

FAR 29.1357 : Circuit protective devices.
(a)
Automaticprotectivedevicesmustbeused to minimizedistresstotheelectrical sys-tem andhazardto the rotorcraftin the event of wiringfaults or serious malfunction of the system or connected equipment.

(b)
[The protective and control devices in the generating system must be designed to de-energize anddisconnectfaultypower sources andpower transmission equipment from their associated buses with su.cient rapidity to provide protection from ha-zardous overvoltage and other malfunctioning.]

(c)
Each resettable circuitprotectivedevice mustbe designed so that, when an overload or circuit fault exists, it will open the circuit regardless of the position of the operating control.

(d)
[Iftheability toreset acircuitbreakerorreplaceafuseisessential tosafetyin .ight, that circuit breaker or fuse must be located and identi.ed so that it can be readily reset or replaced in .ight.

(e)
Eachessentialload musthaveindividual circuitprotection.However,individualpro-tectionfor each circuitin an essentialload system(such as eachpositionlight circuit in a system) is not required.]

(f)
Iffusesareused,theremustbesparefusesforusein .ightequaltoatleast50percent of the number of fuses of each rating required for complete circuit protection.

(g)
[Automatic reset circuit breakers may be used as integral protectors for electrical equipmentprovided thereiscircuitprotectionforthe cablesupplyingpowertothe equipment.]

(a)
Components of the electrical system must meet the applicable .re and smoke pro-tection provisions of Secs. 29.831 and 29.863.

(b)
Electrical cables, terminals, and equipment, in designated .re zones, and that are used in emergency procedures, must be at least .re resistant.
