You must push and hold the RETRACT or EXTEND switchlight to operate the airstair. If you release the switch at any time, airstair operation will stop. The switchlights come on when you operate them.
An unguarded momentary push-button switchlight starts the standby mode of airstair operation. You must push and hold the STANDBY switch to operate the standby airstair control circuitry.
An amber STAIRS OPER (stairs operating) light comes on when the airstair system operates. Door operation and extension or retraction sequences are not complete until the STAIRS OPER light goes out. The STAIRS OPER light has a press-to-test function that does these things:
-Does tests of the lamps in the four switchlights
-Does checks of the power to the control panel.
A rotary three-position treadlight control has these positions:
-OFF - The airstair treadlights go off
-ON - The airstair treadlights come on
-AUTO - The airstair treadlights come on only when
the airstair is fully extended.
Exterior Control Panel
The exterior airstair controls are inside an access panel. Two switches let you select the mode and operate the airstair.

A retract/extend switch lets you operate the airstair. Decals near the switch show the RETRACT and EXTEND positions. You must put and hold the switch to the RETRACT or EXTEND position to operate the airstair. If you release the switch, the airstair operation stops.
A two-position toggle switch selects between the NORMAL and STANDBY modes of airstair operation. This switch selects the power source for the airstair operation. Decals near the switch show the NORMAL and STANDBY positions. The switch is spring-loaded to the NORMAL position. You must push and hold the switch to the STANDBY position to operate the standby airstair control circuitry.
Training Information Point
Make sure the airstair handrail extensions are securely stowed before you retract the airstair. If the airstair handrail extensions are not securely stowed, damage to the airstair and fuselage can occur. Manual handrail stowed switches in the upper handrails prevent airstair operation if the handrail extensions are not securely stowed. A fault in the airstair handrail protection circuitry can prevent airstair retraction. There is a maintenance switch (MAINT) under the airstair ladder. This is a guarded momentary toggle switch. Momentary operation of the switch operates control circuitry to bypass the airstair protection circuitry for one retraction cycle.
Before you operate the airstair, make sure the forward entry door is closed in the cocked position or fully

open. Do not operate the airstair when the door is between the cocked and fully open position. When the door is in an intermediate position, it will interfere with the airstair handrails as they unfold. This will cause damage to the airstair and door.
Do not put a load on the airstair until both sides of the lower ladder rest firmly on the ground. If the ground is uneven and one side of the ladder is not on the ground, you can support it with a wedge.
Do not operate the airstair during these conditions:
-When the area in front of the forward entry door is
not clear -After 3 full cycles in less than 20 minutes -When the wind speed is more than 40 knots -When the door is between the cocked and fully open
positions -When there is no support under the airstair (when the airplane is on jacks).
