1. General
A. The flight recorder is installed in a mounting tray above aft lowered ceiling panel No. 2 in the passenger compartment.
2. Remove Flight Recorder (Fig. 401)
A. Open FLIGHT RECORDER AC and DC circuit breakers on P18-2.
B. Open aft lowered ceiling panel No. 2 (Ref Chapter 25).
C. Cap the electrical connector in the recorder.
D. Unscrew recorder retaining knobs; release flight recorder and remove from mounting tray.
NOTE: If recorder is to be removed for any length of time, cap the electrical connector at the back of the mounting tray.
3. Install Flight Recorder (See figure 401.)
A. Remove electrical connector cap, on the recorder and mounting tray and place recorder in mounting tray and slide recorder into tray to mate connector contacts.
B. Tighten retaining knobs to secure recorder.
C. Close both FLIGHT RECORDER circuit breakers on P18-2.
D. Test flight recorder system.
(1)
Provide electrical power.
(2)
Observe that OFF light on flight recorder control panel is on.
(3)
Set TEST/NORMAL switch on control panel to TEST position. Check that OFF light goes off.

FLIGHT RECORDER ACCELEROMETER - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. General
A. On airplanes with single-axis accelerometers, the accelerometer detects only vertical acceleration for input to the flight recorder. On airplanes with 3-axis accelerometers, longitudinal acceleration signals are also detected and sent to the flight recorder. The accelerometer is mounted on the aft side of the left wheel well forward bulkhead. Access is through the left wheel well.
2. Remove Flight Recorder Accelerometer
A. Open flight recorder ac and dc circuit breakers on P18-2.
B. Disconnect electrical connector from accelerometer (Fig. 401).
C. Remove four accelerometer mounting screws.
D. Remove accelerometer.
3. Install Flight Recorder Accelerometer
A. Place accelerometer on mounting bracket and secure with mounting screws.
B. Install electrical connector on accelerometer.
4. Test Flight Recorder Accelerometer
A. Connect electrical power and energize load control center P18.
B. Ensure flight recorder ac and dc circuit breakers on P18-2 panel are open.
C. Verify accelerometer operation (Airplanes with analog Fairchild Flight recorder).
(1)
Close flight recorder AC and DC circuit breakers on P18-2 panel.
(2)
Actuate flight recorder test switch on overhead panel. Check that flight recorder failure light on overhead panel goes out.
(3)
Tap accelerometer several times. Check that accelerometer scriber on flight recorder moves as accelerometer is tapped.
(4)
Release flight recorder test switch. Check that failure light on overhead panel comes on.
D. Verify accelerometer operation (Airplanes with Sunstrand Universal Flight Data Recorder (UFDR).
(1)
Connect portable tester (Sundstrand DSDU 981-6301-002) to the front of flight recorder (Ref 31-24-00 adjustment/test).
(2)
Close flight recorder AC and DC circuit breakers on P18-2 panel.
(3)
Select SUBFRAME 0 WORD 2 on portable tester and check that portable tester readout is 3714 to 4064.
(4)
Repeat above for WORDS 10 and 13. Check that portable tester readout is 3714 to 4064 for both WORDS.
E. Verify accelerometer operation (Airplanes with Fairchild Digital Flight Recorder)
(1)
Connect portable tester (AACO FAA-0024-001) to the front of flight recorder (Ref 31-24-00 adjustment/test).
(2)
Close flight recorder AC and DC circuit breakers on P18-2 panel.
(3)
Select SUBFRAME O WORD 9 on portable tester. Check that portable tester readout is between 0000 and 0240. If third digit of octal readout is 2 or 6, BIT 5 will be on (acceleration greater than 1 G). If third digit of octal readout is 0 or 4, BIT 5 will be off (acceleration is 1 G or less).
