FLIGHT RECORDER SYSTEM - TROUBLE SHOOTING
EFFECTIVITY
Airplanes with Fairchild analog flight recorder
1. General
A.  The following trouble shooting procedures are based on performance of the system operational test and are presented in tree-type format to aid in rapid fault isolation.
B.  When a test step does not check out, find the box containing the trouble symptom and perform the stated action. Continue to follow a single line by analyzing the results of each test step until the required corrective action is determined. Perform the specified corrective action, then repeat the step at which the failure was encountered and complete the test to check out the system.
C.  All trouble shooting procedures are based on the assumption that wiring is OK and that electrical power is available. If the corrective action in the procedure does not correct the problem, check wiring using the wiring diagram.
D.  The flight recorder system is closely associated with other systems by accepting data from them and recording it. Because functions of the flight recorder system are dependent upon inputs from the compass system, central air data system, these systems should be operationally tested before assuming that an incorrect recording of heading, altitude or airspeed is the result of a defective flight recorder.
E.  The final test step in the procedure requires examination of the data recorded on the tape. This examination is not intended to check calibration or accuracy. It is intended to reveal the failure of a recording or control function.
F.  A defect in the acceleration recording servosystem cannot be isolated to either the accelerometer or the flight recorder unit without using an accelerometer simulator. Because failure in the flight recorder unit is more probable, it should be replaced or the two units should be replaced together.

G.  If the OFF light on the test module should come on when the system is turned on, remove the tape magazine and turn gear on takeup spool to apply tension to tape; then, reinstall magazine and make sure that flight recorder door is closed.
H.  The OFF light will go out immediately upon removal of the failure condition; it will be delayed 15 to 30 seconds upon application of a failure condition.
2.  Prepare for Trouble Shooting
A.  Before starting the trouble shooting procedure, ensure that operating power is available, that the FLIGHT RECORDER AC and DC circuit breakers on panel P18 are closed, and that data inputs are operating. Check operation of panel lights.

FLIGHT RECORDER SYSTEM - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
EFFECTIVITY
Airplanes with Fairchild analog flight recorder
1.  General
A.  Tests of the flight recorder system include an operational test and a system test. The operational test may be performed at any time to assure that the recorder and the control circuits are functioning properly. The system test will provide assurance that the entire system is functioning although it will not verify system calibration. There are no system adjustments within the scope of flight line maintenance.
2.  Operational Test - Flight Recorder System
A.  General
(1)  The operational test will ensure that the OFF indicator light and monitor circuits are operative, the door of the recorder unit is closed, the recording tape is moving, tape tension is correct, and timing marks are being generated.
B.  Test Flight Recorder System
(1)
Provide external electrical power to airplane.

(2)
Check that FLIGHT RECORDER AC and DC circuit breakers on P18 are closed.

(3)
Check that LIGHTS, MASTER CAUTION BUS, INDICATOR LIGHTS MASTER DIMMING BUS, DIM & TEST, ENGINE THRUST REVERSE circuit breakers on P6 are closed.

(4)
Check that OFF indicator light on control panel is on and that neon indicator light on trip and date encoder panel is off.

(5)
Set FLIGHT RECORDER switch on control panel to TEST position and observe that OFF light goes off and neon indicator light on trip and date encoder panel comes on indicating that encoding cycle has started.

(6)
Set FLIGHT RECORDER switch to NORMAL position.

(7)
If no longer required, remove electrical power.
