D.  The flight recorder system is closely associated with other systems by accepting data from them and recording it. Because functions of the flight recorder system are dependent upon inputs from the compass system, central air data system, these systems should be operationally tested before assuming that an incorrect recording of heading, altitude or airspeed is the result of a defective flight recorder.
E.  The final test step in the procedure requires examination of the data recorded on the tape. This examination is not intended to check calibration or accuracy. It is intended to reveal the failure of a recording or control function.
F.  A defect in the acceleration recording servo system cannot be isolated to either the accelerometer or the flight recorder unit without using an accelerometer simulator. Because failure in the flight recorder unit is more probable, it should be replaced or the two units should be replaced together.
G.  The OFF light will go out immediately if no faults exist when power is applied; however, it may be delayed up to 1 minute depending on the fault.
2.  Prepare for Trouble Shooting
A.  Before starting the trouble shooting procedure, ensure that operating power is available, that the FLIGHT RECORDER AC and DC circuit breakers on panel P18 are closed, and that data inputs are operating. Check operation of panel lights.

FLIGHT RECORDER SYSTEM - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
EFFECTIVITY
Airplanes With Fairchild Digital Flight Recorder (DFR)
1.  Flight Recorder System Test
A.  General
(1)
Operating the flight recorder when the airplane is on the ground with engines not running requires setting the TEST-NORMAL switch, on the flight recorder module on P5 to TEST.

(2)
Set pitot static heaters to OFF during test.

(3)
Pitot line pressure application will always equal or exceed static line pressure and difference will not exceed 10.00 inches of mercury.

(4)
Do not apply pressure in excess of 31 inches of mercury absolute to static lines.

(5)
Apply or release vacuum at a rate of climb or descent of approximately 3000 feet per minute or less between test points. At each test point pressure will be reduced slowly to desired level without overshooting.

B.  Equipment and Materials
(1)
Air pressure and vacuum source, 5-40 inches of Hg absolute, with adapter hose to connect to the pitot head and/or test fitting, and gage to measure differential pressure, in a range of at least 10 inches Hg.

(2)
Air pressure and vacuum source, 5-30 inches of Hg absolute with fittings to connect to the static line test or drain fittings and a gage to pressures.

(3)
Synchro transmitter (Bendix AY201 or equivalent).

(4)
Appropriate gage saver restrictors.

(5)
Data Display unit (Portable Tester) (AACO P/N FAA-0024-001).

C.  Prepare Flight Recorder System for Test
(1)
Seal static ports temporarily at skin surface in such a way that seal removal will be complete, leaving no deposits or roughness in or about static ports.

(2)
With static system selector valve in NORMAL, evacuate static system by connecting vacuum source to either test fittings located in cockpit or drain fitting located in nose wheel well. (See 34-11-0, Pitot Static System, for correct procedure.)

CAUTION:  DO NOT CHANGE SETTING OF STATIC SELECTOR VALVE WHILE A VACUUM IS ON STATIC SYSTEM.

(3)
Apply external power.

(4)
Check that following circuit breakers are closed.

(a)
LIGHT circuit breaker on P6.

(b)
FLIGHT RECORDER circuit breakers on P18.

(c)
Two MASTER CAUTION BUS circuit breakers on P6.

(d)
Nine INDICATOR LIGHTS MASTER DIMMING BUS circuit breakers on P6.

(e)
DIM & TEST circuit breaker on P6.

(f)
NO. 1 and 2 ENGINE THRUST REVERSER circuit breakers on P6 (if installed).

D.  Test Flight Recorder System
(1)
 General

(a)
Connect the portable tester to the recorder front panel. Place input/output selector in DFDR Position.

(b)
Unless otherwise specified, set the portable tester switches as follows:

SWITCH SETTING WORD As designated SUBFRAME As designated DATA SOURCE DFDR FORMAT ARINC 717 DISC BLANK OFF SYNC BITS NORMAL

(c)
The fight recorder test requires performing the individual tests given below. The individual tests are each independent and may be performed in any sequence.
