3.  System Test - Flight Recorder System
A.  General
(1)  This test will ensure that all functions of the flight recorder system are being performed and that the system is operating properly. It will not provide any check of system calibration. The test consists of operating the recorder and providing inputs to the system. The results are determined by examining the tape.

(2)
The following precautions should be observed to avoid damaging the equipment during the system test:

(a)
Do not place an empty magazine in the recorder unit because operation will damage the scribe roller.

(b)
Static line pressure must never exceed 31 inches of mercury absolute.

(c)
Static pressure must not be changed at a rate greater than 5000 feet per minute.

(d)
Differential pressure between pitot and static lines must not exceed 10 inches of mercury.

(e)
Changes of pitot line pressure must not be made at a rate exceeding 300 knots per minute.

(3)
To ensure proper operation, always tighten foil by turning takeup spool by hand before installing magazine.

(4)
Do not press the EVENT button on the trip and date encoder while the neon indicator light on the trip and date encoder panel is on because this will interrupt the trip and date recording cycle.

B.  Equipment and Materials
(1)  Pitot-static test set with hose and adapters suitable for connection to pitot-static system (Ref 34-11-0, Adjustment/Test).
C.  Prepare to Test
(1)
Turn off pitot heat switches on P5.

(2)
Connect pitot-static test set to pitot-static system (Ref 34-11-0).

(3)
Provide external electrical power to airplane.

(4)
Perform Operational Test. Leave power on.

(5)
Energize compass system.

D.  Test Flight Recorder System
(1)
Set levers on flight recorder trip and date encoder panel to 222222.

(2)
Check that OFF light on control panel is on.

(3)
Set FLIGHT RECORDER switch on control panel to TEST position. Check that OFF light on control panel is off.

(4)
Check that neon indicator light on trip and date encoder is on indicating that trip and date recording cycle has started.

(5)
Use pitot static test set to simulate altitude of 10,000 feet (20-58 inches of mercury, absolute) then return pressure to ambient.

CAUTION:  RATE OF CHANGE OF STATIC LINE PRESSURE MUST NOT EXCEED 3000 FEET PER MINUTE. PITOT PRESSURE SHOULD BE DECREASED AS STATIC PRESSURE IS DECREASED TO AVOID EXCESSIVE RATE OF CHANGE OF INDICATED AIRSPEED.

(6)
Increase pressure in the pitot line to give an indicated airspeed of 250 knots (3-1 inches of mercury differential, pitot-static) then return pressure to ambient.

CAUTION:  RATE OF CHANGE OF PITOT LINE PRESSURE MUST NOT EXCEED 300 KNOTS PER MINUTE OR DAMAGE TO PITOT-STATIC SYSTEM MAY RESULT.

(7)
Using vertical motion, repeatedly tap flight recorder accelerometer for a period of approximately 1 minute to generate acceleration signals.

(8)
Record heading information as follows:

(a)
Use SET HDG knob on compass control panel to slew magnetic compass indicator to zero degrees and pause for 30 seconds.

(b)
Use SYNC knob to slew compass to 90 degrees and pause for 30 seconds.

(c)
Use SYNC knob to slew compass to 180 degrees and pause for 30 seconds.

(d)
Use SYNC knob to slew compass to 270 degrees and pause for 30 seconds.

(9)
When neon indicator light on trip and date encoder panel goes out., press EVENT pushbutton and hold for approximately 30 seconds.

(10)
Key VHF-l and VHF-2 radios for 10 seconds.

(11)
Press REPEAT pushbutton on trip and date encoder panel and hold until neon indicator light comes on.

(12)
Open door of flight recorder unit and observe that failure light on flight recorder control panel comes on within 15 to 30 seconds.

(13)
Use small screwdriver to trip ratchet on tape magazine releasing tension on takeup spool, close door, and observe that failure light remains on.

(14)
Remove tape magazine from flight recorder unit, turn knob and open door of magazine to permit examination of tape.

(15)
Examine tape to determine that each recording function has been performed properly.
