• configuring the VFSG/ASG as either a generator or starter motor to
support main engine and APU start functions
With the generator control switch is selected ON, the GCU closes the GCB
whenever:
• engine/APU is running
• generator output power quality is acceptable
• no fault condition exists
Load Shedding
There are three types of load management that can result in load shedding:
• Operational Load Management – Loads are inhibited or turned off at
predefined operational phases (preventative load shedding). For example,
wing ice protection, if operating, is inhibited during gear retraction. This
is done for power priority to the hydraulic systems EMPs. Additionally,
during engine start, load management sheds loads to provide maximum
power to the starter generator for engine start.
• Configuration Load Management – occurs as the result of electrical
system configuration changes. For example, loss of a VFSG (preventative
load shedding). For configuration load management, unnecessary loads
are turned off to load the available sources up to, but not exceeding, their
capacity.
• Overload Management – when loads exceed source limits (reactive load
shedding). Airplane loads are shed in a predetermined order to stay within
the capacity of the power sources.
Synoptic indications are provided for certain loads affected by configuration and
overload load management.
Cabin Systems/Utility Power and IFE/PASS Seats
Electrical power to some non-essential loads can be controlled from the flight
deck. Two switches are provided for de-powering these loads in an emergency.
One switch is for control of In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) and passenger seat
power, while the other is for galleys, lights, and other non-essential (utility) loads.
Pushing the IFE/PASS SEATS and CABIN/UTILITY switches will command the
BPCU to shed all associated loads.
