Ground to aircraft messages (uplink) contain crew information (wind for example), or might request
data transmissions which are either sent automatically or by crew action.
Automatic report downlinks are carried out by ACARS Management Unit [MU), which is programmed
according to airline needs (Buyer Furnishing Equipment).
Due to highly customized programming, the ACARS functions may vary from one airline to another
and are therefore, not described in detail.

MANUAL ACCESS TO ACARS FUNCTIONS
Applicable to:
ACARS' functions are manually selected through the MCDU. They are obtained for the FMGC,
CFDS or AIDS by selecting the corresponding key. Cabin management functions (if available) are
accessible through the cabin installed system.
Pressing of a system key will display the system pages, as defined in the airline customized MU
programming.

AUTOMATIC ACCESS TO ACARS FUNCTIONS
Applicable to:
Automatic data transmission can be initiated by the MU, the aircraft systems' programming, or
an uplink message. There is no cockpit indication and no crew action is required. It is a dialogue
between ground and aircraft computers.

(5) This key gives access to pre and post flight reports, and the ACARS print/program (downlink
only).
For operation see the FMGS PILOT GUIDE (Refer to DSC-22_20-70 FLIGHT PLAN
INITIALIZATION THROUGH ACARS).
ACARS
Applicable to:
The ACARS key displays airline-defined functions (Example : Message transmissions, and, event
times).
CFDS
Applicable to:
(Refer to DSC-45-20 MAINTENANCE MENU)
The CMS ACARS interface permits to downlink the following data :
‐ Post flight report (on ground), or current flight report (in flight), which concerns :
• All failure messages, detected by BITE ;
• The warnings displayed to the crew during the last or current flight leg.
Reports can be downlinked, upon crew or ACARS MU request.
‐ Avionics data, which concerns the individual system BITE data (manual downlink only).
Failure messages and warnings (broadcast ‐ data transmitted in real-time to the MU).
‐ Class 3 report (on ground) containing all Class 3 failures, detected during the last flight leg. The
report can be downlinked, upon crew or ACARS MU request.
AIDS
Applicable to:
The AIDS ACARS' interface transmits data for the following applications to the ACARS MU:
‐ Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM),
