This oc curs im me di ately af ter power is
ap plied to the ELT if ei ther of the fol low -
ing oc curs:
1) The ELT is not us ing the op tional
C406-N Pro gramming Adapter (P/N
453-5068) and pins 3 and 4 are not
jumpered (or con nec tion is in terrupted) at
the mat ing cir cu lar con nec tor.
2) If the Pro gramming Adapter is used,
there is a com mu ni ca tion prob lem or wir -
ing er ror.
Note: This er ror will con tinue for up to 1
minute even af ter air craft power is re -
moved due to the in ternal ELT power
sup ply backup.
2. If no error occurs, the ELT has been
programmed with the new aircraft ID.
The ELT now needs to be checked to
determine the new 15 digit Hex ID that
needs to be labeled and registered.
3. Disconnect the antenna coax cable at
the ELT. Although part of the kit, the
antenna provided with the SARSAT
406MHz test set must not be used
because the ELT transmission will reach
the SAR satellite and could cause a false
alarm.
4. Connect Test Coax (611-9010) to the
121.5/243/406 MHz (BNC) output.
5. Connect 30-dB attenuator (500-3000)
to input of SARSAT Tester.
6. Con nect BNC end of Test Coax to
30-dB at tenuator. WARNING: Use of Test
Set with out 30-dB at tenuator may dam age
Test Set.
7. Press “ON” button on Test Set
keypad. Main menu will appear. Press
“R” to receive.
8. Reset the ELT by turning the switch to
“OFF”. Watch the screen on the SARSAT
Tester. When a 406 MHz signal is
received the tester will beep and the
screen will show “Decoding Message”.
9. If the SARSAT Tester receives a good
signal the receiver will beep again and
show “OK” and then return to the original
screen.
10. If the Tester doesn’t receive a good
signal, it may display a message saying
“BAD FRAME”. Repeat transmission
sequence over again from step 9.

11. Press “V” for View on the SARSAT
Tester.
12. Press the “right” arrow key twice to
show the 15 digit ID. The 15 digit ID
will be the last line on the screen (for
this example “2DC75B534AFFBFF”). This
is what needs to be on the label that is
placed on the ELT and what is
registered. Please note that for ELT’s
programmed with the Standard Location
Protocol, the last 5 digits should always
be “FFBFF”.
13. Press the “right” arrow key again to
check the 24-bit address (or tail number).
The Aircraft # displayed on the last line
is the Hexadecimal equivalent of the
24-bit address that the C406-N was
programmed for using the Programming
Adapter (for this example “ADA9A5" is the
same as octal 53324645). If Tail Number
programming is used, the Aircraft Tail
Number will be displayed.
14. There are additional screens that can
be viewed but they are not required for
purposes of this exercise and should be
ignored.
15. To turn off the SARSAT Tester, press
“Q” to get back to the main menu and
then ”Q” (for Quit).
Please note that for Stan dard Lo cation
Protocols the 15 digit hex code re ceived
ends with “FFBFF”. This in di cates the
default value of “no po sition data”, which
is re quired by the reg is tra tion au thority.
User Lo cation Pro to col pro gram ming will
display the same 15-digit ID with or with -
out po si tion data be ing pres ent. For other
pro gram ming pro to cols the in formation dis -
played will dif fer but the key in formation
is still the 15 digit hex code.
Non-location pro gramming pro to cols do not
con tain po sition in formation.
Af ter ob taining the new 15 digit hex
code from the steps per formed above it is
essential that the ELT be reg istered.
Reg is tra tion forms for the US can be ob -
tained from Artex or by call ing NOAA at
1-888-212-SAVE or visit the NOAA web
site at www.sarsat.noaa.gov and click on
“Bea con Reg is tra tion Forms”. The ELT
will also need to be la beled with this new
15 digit hex code. En ter the num ber in
the space pro vided on the ELT prod uct
la bel or use the la bel (591-0999) pro vided
in the in stall kit. In addtion, the coun try
and 3-digit coun try code will need to be
entered in the space pro vided on the ELT
prod uct la bel or use the la bel
