PRO GRAMMING AND PO SI TION
DATA CIR CUITRY OP ER A TION
D.1. Po si tion In ter face Ca -
pa bil ity
ARTEX has en hanced 406 MHz ELT op -
er a tion by giv ing the C406-N the ca pa bil -
ity of di rectly in terfacing with an air craft’s
nav i ga tion sys tem to re ceive po si tion data
(longitude and lat itude) from the air craft’s
on-board nav i ga tion sys tem (ARINC 429
ONLY).
In the event of a crash, the ELT will
transmit the con verted po sition in for ma tion
from the nav i ga tion sys tem, such as the
GPS flight man age ment com puter, lo ran,
etc. Geo sta tion ary sat el lites con stantly
monitor the 406.028 MHz trans missions.
The crash site is in stantly known due to
the air craft’s nav i ga tion sys tem po si tion
data com mu ni ca tion with the ELT via the
Interface unit. With out the po sition data
be ing trans mitted, it is nec es sary for the
po lar or bit ing sat el lites to pass over head,
using Dopp ler Shift tech nol ogy to de ter -
mine po si tion. In a worst case sce nario
this could be a 3 to 4 hour wait for a
po lar or bit ing sat ellite to pass over. In ad -
dition, the ac curacy of the po sition fix is
much better (i.e. 100 me ters ver sus 1 to
2 ki lometers for the stan dard 406.028
MHz sys tem with out in ter face cou pling).
The C406-N sup ports only ARINC 429
data bus for mats. The C406-N will also
al low en coding of Na tional Lo ca tion and
User Lo cation pro to cols which limit po si -
tion ac curacy to 4 min utes.
D.2. ELT Com mu ni ca tion
For mats
The C406-N se ries units sup port ARINC
429 data bus for mats ONLY.
All ARINC 429 Stan dard and GAMA
(high or low speed) se rial bus for mats are
sup ported. The ELT auto-detects the
speed and for mat. La bels 310 (lat itude)
and 311 (lon gitude) are re quired. It is im -
portant that the speed of the ARINC 429
not change once power is ap plied to the
ELT. Other data for mats such as RS-232,
RS-422, etc. are not sup ported.
D.3. C406-N Pro gramming
Adapter
A new fea ture of the C406-N is the
avail abil ity of the op tional C406-N Pro -
gramming Adapter (ARTEX P/N 453-5068).
The Pro gramming Adapter unit will au to -
mat i cally re program a C406-N ELT over -
writ ing pre vi ously stored data, ev ery time
the Adapter de termines that a new ELT
with dif fer ent pro gramming has been
placed in the air craft. This fa cil i tates mov -
ing the ELT from one air craft to an other
when per forming rou tine main tenance, etc.
The C406-N Pro gramming Adapter may
be pro grammed with any air craft ad dress
(24-bit ad dress or tail num ber) prior to its
in stal la tion with the ELT. The Pro -
gramming Adapter is placed in-line with
the ELT wir ing har ness and con nects to
the mat ing cir cular con nec tor. The Pro -
gramming Adapter may be custom pro -
grammed by ARTEX or any ARTEX
Repair Sta tion. The abil ity to pro gram the
Adapter will re quire new soft ware and
hard ware from ARTEX. Con tact ARTEX
for the avail abil ity of the C406-N pro -
gramming pack age.
WARNING: The pro gramming and la bel -
ing of the ELT must match the air craft in
which it is in stalled. The prod uct la bel of
the ELT will need to be re-marked to re -
flect the new pro gram ming and/or coun try
of reg is try if the ELT is re programmed by
the Pro gramming Adapter or by any other
method. Con tact your lo cal civil avi ation

D.4. Pro gramming Adapter
In stal la tion (P/N 453-5068)
The Pro gramming Adapter (also know as
PA), is housed in a back shell ex tension
designed for the cir cu lar con nec tor (P/N
150-5060) that mates to the ELT. The PA
is in stalled in-line with the ELT re mote
switch har ness. The PA con tains cir cuitry
which is en capsulated. There are 6 wires
which exit the rear of the PA but are fed
back through the body of the PA. These
wires have con nector pins pre-installed. All
wires used in the ELT re mote switch har -
ness are in tended to be fed through a
