REG IS TRA TION RE QUIREMENTS
B.1. REG IS TRA TION
When a 406.028 MHz ELT is in stalled in
an air craft, it is im perative that the air craft
owner reg ister the ELT. In the United
States the Na tional Oce anic and At mo -
spheric Ad ministration (NOAA) is the reg -
istration agency. Each 406.028 MHz ELT
contains a unique iden tification code that
is trans mit ted to the sat el lite. This helps
the “Res cue Co ordination Cen ter” (RCC)
de ter mine whether an emer gency ac tually
has oc curred. The unique iden ti fi ca tion
permits ac cessing a data base. In the
United States the data base con tains the
following:
· Owner’s Name
· Ad dress
· Tele phone Num ber
· Air craft Type
· Air craft Reg is tra tion Num ber
This data fa cil i tates in qui ries as to the
whereabouts of the air craft, the ex istence
of a flight plan and so forth. The above
in for ma tion should be kept up to date,
with any changes to the data cor rected
(i.e. change of ad dress, phone num bers,
etc.). NOTE: For any ELT pro grammed
with Stan dard Lo cation Pro to col, en sure
that the last 5 dig its of the UIN (15 digit
Hex ID) are FFBFF(hex).
The fol lowing ad dress should be used to
register and ob tain in for ma tion on how to
register 406 MHz ELT’s in the United
States:
Reg is tra tion forms are avail able at
www.sarsat.noaa.gov. Also, blank reg is tra -
tion forms are shipped with all complete
ELT kits.

WARNING: If the ELT is moved to a
dif fer ent air craft than which it was orig i -
nally reg istered with, the ELT must be
re-registered and the prod uct la bel
re-marked to in di cate the new pro gram -
ming and/or new coun try of reg is try.
NOTE: If us ing the op tional Pro gramming
Adapter (Artex P/N 453-5068) re fer to Ap -
pen dix D for de tails on pro gramming
changes.
If the 406.028 MHz ELT is to be used
in a coun try other than the United States
or Canada, the Civil Avi a tion Au thority in
the ap plicable coun try must be con tacted
to ob tain the cor rect reg istration form. Re -

in for ma tion re gard ing ELT pro gram ming
and registration, avail able at
www.cospas-sarsat.org.
