least 30 sec onds prior to ac ti va tion of the
ELT. When test ing the ELT, al low to run
at least 50 sec onds or un til the first “live”
406 MHz burst is trans mit ted and re -
ceived by the test set. This mes sage will
con tain the po sition in formation (lat i -
tude/lon gi tude). ARTEX only rec om mends
this test be per formed when the 406
MHz sig nal can be prop erly shielded in -
side of a screen room or con tainer. If re -
ceived by a sat el lite, this sig nal will be
in ter preted as an ac tual emer gency
sig nal. ARTEX does not re quire that this
test be per formed; any prob lem with re -
ceived po si tion data will be shown by the
“5 flash” er ror dur ing the self test (see
Section 4.3.16).
Note: The ini tial dis play on the SARSAT
Beacon Test Set can flag sev eral prob -
lems prior to ad vancing into the in di vid ual

a) if a “BAD FRAME” mes sage ap pears
af ter the 3rd or 4th trans mit at tempt, the
Beacon Test Set is not re ceiv ing trans mit
data. Ver ify that the SARSAT Bea con
Test Set does not have a low bat tery.
Check the coax con nec tion be tween the
ELT’s BNC con nec tor and the SARSAT
Beacon Test Set. Check the in ter nal ELT
coax con nection be tween the BNC con -
nec tor and the 406.028 MHz mod ule.
Finally, try a dif fer ent bat tery pack.

lem with the ELT (i.e. a pro gram ming
problem or a prob lem with the trans mitter
module) or the bat tery pack.
c) if there is no 406.028 MHz trans mit ter
burst pres ent, check the 3.0 Amp fuse on
the cir cuit board in the bat tery pack for
an open con dition. If the fuse is good,
there is most likely a prob lem with the
406.028 MHz mod ule or its in terconnec -
tions.
