DCq - A dovice control character which is primarily intandsd for
tumlng off, stopping or intermptlng an ancillary device. If it is
not requlred for this puwse, it may be used for any other
deuce control function not provided by other DCs.
Examples of use of the device controls
1 ) One switching
on - DC2 off - DC4
2) Two independent sw~tchings
First one on - DC2 off - DC4
Seccnd one on - DC1 off - DC3
3) Two dependent switchings
General on - DC2 off - DCq
Pan~cular on - DC off - DCg
41 Input and output switching
Output on - DC2 off - DC4
Input on - OC1 off - DCg
DEL - Delete - A character used primarily to erase or obliterate an
erroneous or unwanted character in punched tape. DEL
characters may also serve to accomplish rnedis-fill or time-fill.
They may be ~nsenedIn to or removed from a stream of data
w~thouta ffecting the ~nformetlonc ontent of that stream. but
then the addltlon or removal of these characters may affect
tho lnformatlon layout and/or the contrd of equipment.

OLE - Data link escape - A transmission control character which
will change the meaning of a limited numhr of coniigt~abily
following characters. It is used exclusively to provde
supplementaw data transmission contml functions. Only
graphic characre- and transmlssron control charactem can be
used in DL€ sequences.
EM - End of medium - A contrd character that may be used to
identify the physical end of a medium. or the end of the used
portion of a medium. or the end of the wanted portion of data
recorded on a medlum. The position of this character does not
necessarily correspond to the physical end of the medium.
ENQ - Enqurry - A transrnissi~c ontrol character used as a request
for a response from a remote station -the response may
include statlon ident~ficat~oann d/or statlon status. When a
"Who are you?" funct~onis requ~redo n the general swltched
transmission network, the first use of EN0 after the
connection I$ established shall have the rneanmg "Who are
(stat~onid ent~fication)S. ubsequent use of ENQ may, or
may not. include the funct~on"V Vho are you?", as determlned
by agreement.
EOT - End of transmission - A transmlsslon control character used
to indlcate the conclusion of the transrnlsslon of one or more
texts.
ESC - Escape - A control character whlch IS used to prov~de an
addlt~onal control function. It alters the meanlng of a Itm~ted
number of cont~guously followrng b ~ cto mbmatlons whlch
constitute the escape sequence.
Escape sequences are used to obtaln addrt~onal contrd
funct~onsw hich may prov~dea mong other things graphlc sets
outs~deth e standard set. Such control functions must not be
used as addltlonal transmlsslon controls
The use of the character ESC and of the escape sequences In
conlunctlon w~thco de extenslon technlques IS the subject of
an IS0 Standard.
ETB - Endof transm~ssronb lock - A transmlsslon contrd character
used to lnd~cateth e end of a transmlsslon block of data whem
data are d l v ~ d dIn to such blmks for transmlsslon purposes
EfX - End of text - A transmission control character whlch
terminates a text.
FF - Form feed - A format effector whlch xlvances the actlve
pos~tionto the same character posltion on a pre-determ~ned
line of the next form or page.
HT - Horizontal tabulatron - A format effector which advances
the active posltion to the next predetermined character
position on the same Ilne.

IS1 (US) - A control character used to separate and qual~fyd ata log~cally;
its specific meanlng has to be defined for each appl~catlon. If
this character is used in hietaxhrcal order as spec~fiedIn the
general defin~tiono f IS, it delim~tsa data item called a UNIT.
IS2 (RS) - A control character used to separate and qualify data logically:
its spec~fic meaning has to be defined for each appllcatlon. If
this character is used in hierarchical order as specified in the
general definit~on of IS, it delimits a data item called a
RECORD.
IS3 lGSl - 4 cmtrd character used to separate and qualify data logically;
its specific meaning has to be defined fw each applicatlm. If
this character is used in hierarchical order as specified in the
