table on recording medla or on transmlsslon channels. These more expllclt
defln~t~onasn d the use of these characters are the sumect of IS0
publlcat~ons.
General des~gnatrons of control characters
The general desrgnat~ono f control charactee ~nvolvesa 5p~c1ficc lass
name followed by a subscnpt number.
They are defined as follows:
TC - Transmrssron control charecten - Cmtml characters
Intended to control or facll~tate transmrsslon of ~ n f o m t ~ o n
over telecommunlcatlon networks
The use of the TC characters on the general
telecmmun~cat~on networks 1s the subect of IS0
publrcatlons.
The transmlsslon control characters are.
ACK. OLE. ENQ. EOT, ETB. ETX. NAK. SOH. STX and SYN
Formal effectors - Control characters mamly intended for the
control of the layout and posrticnrng of information on printing
and /or display devlces. In the definitrons of specific format
effectors. any reference to pnntlng devices should be
lnterproted as lncludlng dlsplay devlcas. The definitions of
format effectors use the following concept:
l 3) s page is composed of a number of lines of characters;
b) the characters forming a llne occupy a number of
posltlons called character posltlons:
C) the actlve posltlon IS that character posrtion In whlch the
character about to be processed would a w a r ~f ~t were to be
pnnted. The actlve posltlon normally advances one character
poslt~ona t a tlme.
The format effector characters are:
BS, CR, FF, MT, LF and VT (see also Note 1 ro
Table 8-2).
Devrce control characters - Conrrd characters for the control
Of a local Or remote anclllarv devlce (or devices) connected to a
data processing and/or telecomrnun~cat~osny stem These
control characters are not Intended to control
telecommun~cat~osny stems: thls should be achleved by the
use of TCS.
Cenaln preferred uses of the lndlvldual DCs are glven below
under Specrfrc control characters
IS - lnformatlon separators - Control characten that are used to
separate and qual~fv data logically. There are four such
characters They may be used etther In hterarchlcal order or
non-h~erarch~callyIn; the latter case thew specrf~cm eanlngs
depend on the~ra ppl~cataons
When they are used hlerarchlcally the ascending order 1s
US. RS. GS. FS
In th~$ca se data normally del~m~tebdy a panlcular separator
cannot be spl~t by a h~gher order separator but will be
cons~dereda s delrmlted by any h~ghero rder separator
lndlvldual members of the classes of controls are sornetlmes referred to by
thew abbreviated class name and a subscnpt number (e.g. TC5) and
sornetlmes by a speclfic name lndlcetlve of thew use le.g. ENQ).
Different but related meanings may be associated with some of the
control characters but in an interchange of data this normally requires
agreement between the sender and the recipient,
ACK - Acknowledge - A transmission contml character transmitted
by a receiver as an affirmative response to the sender.
BEL - Bell - A control character that is used when them is a need to
call for attention: ~t may control alarm or attention devicrrs.
BS - Backspece - A format effector which moves the aCbve
position one character position backwards on the same line.
CAN - Camel - A character, of the fint charactar of a saqum%i,
indicating that the data preceding it am in enor. As a mlt
these data am to be ignored. The specifc meanrng of thls
character must be defined for each application andlor
between sender and recipient.
CR - Carriage return - A format effector which moves the active
p i t i o n to the first character pasition on the same line.
Device cantmls I
DC1 - A devlCe control character which is primarily intended for
tumlng on or starlrng an ancillary dewce. If it is not requid for
this pumse. it may be used to restom a device to the basic
mode of operation (see also OC2 and DCg). or for any other
device control function not provided by other DCs.
DC2 - A devlce control character which is primarily intmded for
tumlng on or starring an ancillary device. If it is not required for
this purpose, it may be used to set a device to a speck1 mode
of opwatim (in which case OC1 is used to restore the devce
to the basic model, or for any other devicecontml function not
prov~ddb y other DCs.
DCg - A devlce control character whsh 1s primarily intended for
tumlng off or stopping an ancillary deviee. This function may
be a secondary level stop, e.g. wait. pause, stand-by or halt (in
whlch case OC 1 is used to restore normal operabonl. If it is not
required for this purpose, it may be used far any other debica
contrd functlon not provided by other DCs.
