Recommendation.- Slope changes on that portion of a
strip to be graded should be as gradual as practicable and
abrupt changes or sudden reversals of slopes avoided. 3.5 Runway end safety areas

Recommendation.- Transverse slopes on that portion of
a strip to be graded should be adequate to prevent the accumulation
of water'on the su$ace but should not exceed:

3.5.1 A runway end safety area shall be provided at each
end of a runway strip where:

Attachment A, Section 9.
except that to facilitate drainage the slope for the first 3 m
outward from the runway, shoulder or stopway edge should be
negative as measured in the direction away from the runway
and may be as great as 5 per cent.
Dimensions of runway end safety areas
3.4.1 5 Recommendation.- The transverse slopes of any
portion of a strip beyond that to be graded should not exceed
an upward slope of 5 per cent as measured in the direction
away from the runway.
3.5.2 A runway end safety area shall extend from the end
of a runway strip to a distance of at least 90 m.
3.5.3 Recommendation.- A runway end safety area
should, as far as practicable, extendfim the end of a runway
Strength of runway strips strip to a distance of at least:
3.4.16 Recommendation.- That portion of a strip of an
instrument runway within a distance of at least:
- 240 m where the code number is 3 or 4: and
- 120 m where the code number is 1 or 2.
- 75 m where the code number is 3 or 4; and
3.5.4 The width of a runway end safety area shall be at
- 40 m where the code number is I or 2; least twice that of the associated runway.
3.5.5 Recommendation.- The width of a runway end
safety area should, wherever practicable, be equal to that of
the graded portion of the associated runway strip.

Objects on rNnway end safety areas
Note.- Guidance on preparation of runway strips is given
in the Aerodrome Design Manual, Part I. Note.- See 9.9 for information regarding. siting of
equipment and installations on runway end safety areas.
