tangible improvement in airspace and airport utilisation.
Together they should result in an annual reduction
in CO2 emissions of 1,555,000 tonnes each year and
a saving in the airlines?fuel bill in the region of €390
million.
The plan will be implemented with
IATA抯 member airlines, the air navigation
service providers (ANSPs), airports,
the military and States. It comes on top
of the substantial efforts which have
been made over the last nine years by
ANSPs, State civil and military aviation
authorities, airlines and airports
working together in close coordination
within EUROCONTROL to improve the
performance of the European air traffic
management network. Between 1999
and 2007, while traffic grew by 25%, the
total delays caused by lack of air traffic
control capacity fell by 66%. In parallel,
routes flown were shortened on average by approximately
4 km. Together these improvements generated
3.5 million tons of CO2 savings per year.
揟his is an ambitious plan, which demonstrates the
commitment of the aviation industry to work together to
find common solutions to our common challenges,?said
David McMillan, Director General of EUROCONTROL.
揑t is a win-win: together we are addressing the impact
of the increasing price of fuel, while also reducing the
impact of aviation on the environment.?

揈xploiting available airspace ?
flight planning in 2009?Workshop
On 29 October 2008, EUROCONTROL will host a second DMEAN Flight
Planning Workshop with the focus on 2009 operations. It will be held in the
EUROPA Conference Room at EUROCONTROL headquarters in Brussels.
The objectives of the workshop are to:
n ensure aircraft operators and flight plan service providers are prepared
for the flight plan processes in 2009 so that airspace availability can be
exploited in a more dynamic manner;
n obtain views from aircraft operators and flight plan service providers on
what else is required to make this work; and
n acquire a common understanding on expected ATM-AO interaction and
related flight planning processes by 2011.
