ENGINE -INTERMIX, INTERCHANGE, SUBSTITUTION

Engine Intermix, Interchange, Substitution
The engines can be intermixed, interchanged, substituted, derated or the takeoff thrust limit can be changed.
*
Engine intermix is the operation of the airplane with two different engine models installed. The takeoff thrust ratings should be the same.

*
Engine interchange is the replacement of an engine with another engine that is the same model with the same thrust setting.

*
Engine substitution is the removal both engines and the installation of two different engines that may not be the same model as the engines that were removed.

*
A derated engine is an engine that was modified to operate at a lower takeoff thrust rating than the thrust limit. The thrust limit is defined as the maximum sea level thrust level for a specific airplane model or engine model.

*
An engine that was derated to operate at a lower takeoff thrust rating can be changed to operate at a higher thrust rating. However, the takeoff thrust rating can not be more than the thrust limit.


On the 777, the basic engine models can be the Pratt and Whitney PW4084, the PW4090 and the PW4098. In general, the thrust limits are approximately 84,000 pounds of thrust for the PW4084, approximately 90,000 pounds of thrust for the PW4090 and approximately 98,000 pounds of thrust for the PW4098.
