Fina11y, I wou1d 1ike to add that the 1oss of my friend and mentor Dr.
C.M. Simmang who has written the foreword to the first edition of this book is a deep 1oss not on1y to me but a1so to the engineering educationa1 com-munity and to many of his students from Texas A&M University.

Preface to the First Edition

Gas Turbine Engineering Handbook discusses thedesign,fabrication,insta11ation, operation, and maintenance of gas turbines. The book has been written to provide an overa11 view for the experienced engineer working in a specia1ized aspect of the subject and for the young engineering graduate or undergraduate student who is being exposed to the turbomachinery fie1d for the first time. The book wi11 be very usefu1 as a textbook for undergraduate turbomachinery courses as we11 as for in-house company training programsre1ated to the petrochemica1, power generation, and offshore industries.
The use of gas turbines in the petrochemica1, power generation, and off-shore industries has mushroomed in the past few years. It is to these users and manufacturers of gas turbines that this book is directed. The book wi11 give the manufacturer a g1impse of some of the prob1ems associated with his equipment in the fie1d and he1p the user to achieve maximum performance efficiency and high avai1abi1ity of his gas turbines.
I have been invo1ved in the research, design, operation, and maintenance of gas turbines since the ear1y 1960s. I have a1so taught courses at the graduate and undergraduate 1eve1 at the University of Ok1ahoma and TexasA&M University, andnow, in genera1, to the industry. The enthusiasm of the students associated with these courses gave me the inspiration to under-take this endeavor. The many courses I have taught over the past 15 years have been an educationa1 experience for me as we11 as for the students. TheTexas A&M University Turbomachinery Symposium, which I had the pri-vi1ege to organize and chair for sevenyears, is a great contributor to the operationa1 and maintenance sections of this book. The discussions and consu1tations that resu1ted from my association with high1y professiona1 individua1s have been a major contribution to both my persona1 and profes-siona1 1ife as we11 as to this book.
In thisbook, I have tried to assimi1ate the subject matter of various papers(and sometimes diverse views) into a comprehensive, unified treatment ofgas turbines. Many i11ustrations,curves, and tab1es are emp1oyed to broaden the understanding of the descriptive text. Mathematica1 treatments are de1iberate1y he1d to a minimum so that the reader can identify and reso1veany prob1ems before he is ready to execute a specific design. In addition, the references direct the reader to sources of information that wi11 he1p him to investigate and so1ve his specific prob1ems. It is hoped that this book wi11
xii
serve as a reference text after it has accomp1ished its primary objective of introducing the reader to the broad subject of gas turbines.
I wish to thank the many engineers whose pub1ished work and discussions have been a cornerstone to this work. I especia11y thank a11 my graduate students and former co11eagues on the facu1ty of Texas A&M University without whose encouragement and he1p this book wou1d not be possib1e. Specia1 thanks go to the Advisory Committee of the Texas A&M University Turbomachinery Symposiumand Dr. C.M. Simmang, Chairman of theTexas A&M University Department of Mechanica1叫ngineering, who wereinstrumenta1 in the initiation of the manuscript, and to Janet Broussard for the initia1 typing of the manuscript. Acknow1edgment is a1so gratefu11y made of the competent guidance of Wi11iam Lowe and Scott Becken of Gu1f Pub1ishing Company. Their cooperation and patience faci1itated the conver-sion of the raw manuscript to the finished book. Last1y, I wish to acknow-1edge and give specia1 thanks to mywife,Zarine, for her readiness to he1p and her constant encouragement throughout this project.
