MAGNETIC CHIP DETECTOR HOUSING - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1.  General
A.  The engine magnetic chip detector plugs are held in place by replaceable housings. The housings include a self closing valve. The self closing valve stops oil leakage when the chip detector plugs are removed.
B.  Replace the housings if there is oil leakage or if the housings are worn.
2.  Equipment
A.  Torque Wrench
B.  Sockets, 3/4 inch, 7/8 inch and 1 inch
C.  1 gallon bucket
D.  Engine oil per P&W Specification No. 521
CAUTION:  SOME OILS ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WHEN MIXED UNLESS COMPATIBILITY IS ASSURED. DO NOT MIX BRAND NAME OILS.
3.  References

4.  Replace Chip Detector Housing
A.  Housing Removal
(1)
Open side cowl panels.

(2)
Remove the magnetic plug and inspect the plug (AMM 79-21-42/601).

(3)
Put the bucket below the housing to catch the oil that drains.

(4)
Remove the housing.

NOTE: Oil will drain when the housing is removed. Install the new housing immediately.

B.  Housing Installation
(1)
Install the replacement housing.  NOTE: Oil will drain when the housing is removed. Install the new housing immediately.

(2)
Tighten the housing as follows:

(3)
Install magnetic plug.

(a)
Install new O-ring on the magnetic plug.

CAUTION:  FAILURE TO INSTALL O-RINGS CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE OIL LOSS DURING ENGINE OPERATION WITH POSSIBLE ENGINE FAILURE.

(b)
Install the magnetic plug by pushing in on plug and rotating plug.

(4)
Check engine oil level and service if necessary (AMM 12-13-11/201).

(5)
Check for signs of oil leakage around the housing.

(6)
Make sure the area is clean before you close the side cowl panels.

(7)
Close the side cowl panels.

MAGNETIC CHIP DETECTORS - INSPECTION/CHECK
EFFECTIVITY
GJ ALL EXCEPT B 2509
1. General
A.  The engine scavenge system is furnished with magnetic chip detector plugs which will hold ferrous metal particles. These magnetic plugs are installed at four locations. Locations of the magnetic plugs are shown in Fig. 601.
B.  Routine inspection of magnetic plugs will give an indication of the deteriorating portion of engine bearing(s), scavenge pumps, and gearbox.
C.  Plugs may be removed without draining the oil.
2.  Check Magnetic Chip Detector (Fig. 601)
A.  Open side cowl panels.
B.  Remove four magnetic plugs as shown in Fig. 601 by pushing in on plug and rotating. Discard O-ring.
NOTE:  Magnetic plug may be removed without losing oil. The plug housing contains a self-closing valve which closes as plug is withdrawn.
C.  Check the plug housing.
(1)
Examine the plug housing for wear because of vibration of the stainless steel plug engagement pins against the aluminum housing. Replace the housing if it is worn (AMM 79-21-42/401).

(2)
Check for continuous oil leakage from the self-closing valve in the housing after the magnetic plug is removed. If the oil leakage is continuous, replace the housing (AMM 79-21-42/401).

D.  Check magnetic plugs.
(1)
Examine plug for unusually large collections of metal particles, or presence of large fragments such as pieces of pins, lockwire, and chips from castings.

(2)
Check residual magnetism of magnet in plug.

(a)
Hang magnetic plug from horizontal flat metal surface. Magnet must support its suspended weight.
