Set the SELECT switch to the COMP position. Adjust the COMP SIMULATOR knob on the tester to read 108.8 pf on the LCD display. This is the nominal capacitance of a full tank.

(k)  
Put the tester FUNCT switch in the SIM TU & COMP position.

 

(4)  
Adjust the oil quantity indicating system EMPTY and FULL.

(a)  
Close the circuit breaker on the P6 Load Control Panel to provide power to the oil quantity indicator.

(b)  
Adjust the screw marked "E" on the back of the oil quantity indicator until the pointer reads 0 gallons. Press the OIL QTY TEST switch on the flight engineer's panel momentarily and release. Readjust the "E" screw if it is necessary to make the pointer read 0 gallons.

(c)  
If the pointer does not move in a downscale direction when the OIL QTY TEST switch is pressed, troubleshoot the system (Ref 79-31-0, page 101).

(d)  
Switch the tester FUNCT switch to the MEASURE INT position. Adjust the TU knob to read 87.7 pf on the LCD display. Switch the FUNCT switch on the tester to the SIM TU & COMP position.

CAUTION:  DO NOT LEAVE THE TESTER IN THE MEASURE INT POSITION WITH THE POWER TO THE INDICATOR ON FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTES. THE INDICATOR WILL RUN TO A POINT BELOW 0 GALLONS WHILE THE TESTER IS IN THE MEASURE INT POSITION. THIS IS NORMAL. HOWEVER, DAMAGE TO THE INDICATOR CAN OCCUR IF THERE IS A COMPLETE LOSS OF INPUT SIGNAL FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.

(e)  
Adjust the screw marked "F" on the back of the indicator until the pointer reads 4.75 gallons. Press the OIL QTY TEST switch momentarily and release. Readjust the "F" screw if it is necessary to return the pointer to 4.75 gallons.

(f)  
Switch the FUNCT switch on the tester to the MEASURE INT position. Adjust the TU SIMULATOR to read 22.3 pf on the LCD display. Switch the FUNCT switch to SIM TU & COMP position.

(g)  
Press the OIL QTY TEST switch momentarily and release. Readjust the "E" screw if required to read 0 gallons.

(h)  
Pull the circuit breaker C280 or C281 on the P6 Load Control Panel for the oil quantity indicating system being adjusted. Turn the tester to OFF and disconnect the tester from the "T" cable and the airframe ground.

(i)  
Disconnect the "T" cable from the indicator jack and the electrical connector plug.

(j)  
Reconnect the electrical connector to the indicator. Close the circuit breaker on the P6 panel and verify that the oil quantity indicator reads 4.75 gallons. Return the panel lighting to the normal level.

(k)  
Remove the power from the airplane if it is no longer needed.


D.  Calibrate the indicator with the oil drained from the tank.
(1)  
Equipment and Materials

(a) 
 Approved engine oil

(b)  
Container, 6 gallon capacity, approved for oil

 

(2)  
Prepare Oil Quantity Indicating System for Adjustment

(a)  
Pull circuit breaker C280 or C281 on the P6 Load Control Panel to remove power from the oil quantity system to be adjusted.

(b)  
Open the left cowl panel (Ref 71-11-11 R/I).

(c)  
Put the container under the oil tank drain valve. Open the oil tank drain valve and allow oil to drain for 5 minutes. Close drain valve.

(d)  
If engine has been shut down for more than 30 minutes, remove the engine gearbox drain plugs to assure complete drainage. Replace plugs and lockwire after draining.

(e)  
Remove the indicator for the tank to be calibrated from the panel. Do not disconnect the indicator from the aircraft wiring.

(3)  Adjust the oil quantity indicating system EMPTY and FULL.
(a)  
Add 1.25 gallons of oil to the oil tank.

CAUTION:  EITHER HYDROCARBON OR SYNTHETIC ENGINE OILS MAY BE USED IN THE JT8D ENGINE, BUT THE OILS MAY NOT BE MIXED PER PRATT & WHITNEY STANDARDS. IF OILS WHICH ARE NOT COMPATIBLE ARE MIXED, THEY CAN REACT AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.

(b)  
Close the circuit breaker on the P6 Load Control Panel to provide power to the oil quantity indicator.

(c)  
Adjust the screw marked "E" on the back of the oil quantity indicator until the pointer reads 0 gallons. Press the OIL QTY TEST switch on the center instruments panel momentarily and release. Readjust the "E" screw if it is necessary to make the pointer read 0 gallons.
