software tools to manage the data as well as in terms of resource availability with the necessary
background to manage the structured information.
In 1998 further to customer requirements, Airbus released a new software product (the Starter
Pack) for those customers that had adopted the paper / PDF format to manage the FCOM and
MEL. The Starter Pack has been offered (free of charge) to convert the SGML into FrameMaker
format. This tool has been developed to enable customers to amend the data and produce a paper
/ PDF copy of the FCOM and MEL.
In 1998 Airbus initiated the development of the first module of the LPC corresponding to the Airbus
EFB. This module was the FCOM Consultation, and Airbus was the first Aircraft Manufacturer to
adopt the emerging Web Technology, as the FCOM Consultation module is based on HTML
format.
This product was for those customers that had decided to use electronic means to manage the
FCOM and the MEL. A specific software tool has been developed to enable the customers to
modify the FCOM and the MEL (mainly the SOP and items of the MMEL).
1.1 ISSUES
• As the SGML standard does not take into account layout characteristics, the main
drawback of the Starter Pack is its inability to strictly cope with the Airbus paper layout,
• No possibility to manage an electronic output (HTML) and a paper / PDF output with the
same tool,
• A new technology (XML) has been adopted by the market. This technology is derived from
SGML and aims to ease the use of the structured data,
• The Airbus Flight Operations Digital Data no longer copes any more with our customers’
expectations and the state of the art in terms of technology.
1.2 ACTIONS TAKEN BY AIRBUS
• Since 1999 a training course on FCOM and MMEL SGML data is made available by Airbus
• A software product to manage the SGML data (ADOC manager) is part of the Airbus
catalog
• Since 2000 Airbus has been a key actor in the ATA Flight Operations Working Group to
review completely the ATA standard in order to cope with the emerging technology as well
as to take benefit of the experience gained in the management of the structured data.
Airbus has also shared with the ATA community the concepts put in place in the framework
of the A380.
The outcomes of these actions are:

o The standard related to the Flight Operations is based on XML technology
o The standard related to the Flight Operations is based on information concept rather
than on document concept.
• As the structure of the SGML deliverable is based on document concept, it has been
decided to not convert the SGML into XML (the result would neither satisfy the document
concept nor the information concept), but to rewrite the Flight Operations documentation
according to the new ATA standard in the framework of the Airbus Going Digital Project
(also called “Legacy project”).
• This new XML format is similar to the actual A380 format. It will be the standard format for
all flight ops manuals in the future.
• Airbus delivered the first XML data in 2008: FCTM and CCOM. The Airbus Flight
Operations documentation in XML has the same structure whatever the Aircraft type.
• Airbus will offer software products to manage the Flight Operations XML data (FCOM,
MMEL, CCOM, FCTM...):
o Flight Ops Document Management System (basic offer) to manage the Flight
Operations XML data,
o ADOC for flight ops (high end) to manage the Flight Operations XML data as well as
the Maintenance SGML data in a mixed fleet.
1.3 CAUTION NOTE
Even if the Flight Operations documentation is delivered in XML format, the data structures are
definitely more complex than a memo or a standard document. If a customer intends to develop its
own solution instead of using Airbus ones (FLIGHT OPS DOC MANAGER and ADOC), it has to
anticipate some software development costs linked to the complexity of the information.
Of course some training related to the XML deliverables will be made available by Airbus.
