Whitney.

COMMENT: In recent years turbofan
engines have taken over from turbojet
engines. Frank Whittle (1907–96) was

engine. Whittle developed a jet aircraft
by 1941 and the first military jet
aircraft, the Gloster Meteor, became
operational in 1944.
