4.  Auxiliary Fuel Tank Shift Aft for Access
A.  Shift Auxiliary Fuel Tank Aft
(1)  
Disconnect connections to fuel tank assembly (Ref Chapter 28, Auxiliary Fuel Tanks).

(a)  
Disconnect all plumbing connections and plug lines.

(b)  
Aerate aft cargo compartment to ensure no fuel vapors are present.

(c)  
Disconnect electrical wiring including ground wires and bonding jumpers.

 

(2)
Remove connections to fuel tank assembly (Ref Chapter 28, Auxiliary Fuel Tanks).

(a)  
Disconnect cavity drain flex hose located below forward edge of tank.

(b)  
Disconnect sump drain shroud from tank and withdraw through airplane skin below tank (Ref 28-14-41, Removal/Installation).

 

(3)  
Break sealant at base of fuel and vent fittings on top of tank structure and remove fittings and plug.

(4)  
Position ball roller mats on plywood shoring under tank.

(5)  
Place timbers over tank support fittings.

(6)  
Secure ratchet buckle hook to each tank support fitting. With strap over timber operate each ratchet until weight of tank is taken by ratchet straps.

(7)  
Disconnect fore-aft restraint turnbuckles from fittings on right and left sides of body structure and swing turnbuckles in against module. Use crowfoot adapter for disconnecting turnbuckle connection.

CAUTION:  EXERCISE CARE WHEN POSITIONING TURNBUCKLES AGAINST BODY STRUCTURE TO PREVENT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE.
NOTE: Do not alter adjustment of turnbuckles if original adjustment was satisfactory.
(8)  
Remove bolts attaching tank fittings to links which secure to floor beam fittings. Bag and stow bolts, nuts and washers for use or reinstallation.

(9)  
Lower tank structure on to ball roller mats by operating ratchet buckles.

(10)
Remove ratchet buckle hooks from tank support fittings.

(11)
Move tank aft on ball roller mats and shoring to provide for inspection, maintenance, or repair.


B.  Reposition Auxiliary Fuel Tank
(1)  
Slide tank forward on ball roller mats after inspection and maintenance is complete.

(2)  
Position tank so that tank fittings are directly under links attached to floor beams.

(3)  
Secure ratchet buckle hooks to hole in each tank support fitting. With straps over timbers, operate each ratchet simultaneously until tank is positioned to match top attachment fittings with overhead structure fittings.

(4)  
On left-hand side, install shoulder bolts removed in step C.(8) through links and tank fittings using washers under boltheads and under nuts. Check that gap between tank fitting bearing and link is 0.07 to 0.15 inch (typical both sides of bearing). Check that gap (end play) between washer under nut and link is 0.005 to 0.030 inch.

(5)  
On right-hand side, install bolts removed in step C.(8) through links and tank fittings using washers under bolthead and nuts. Add light washer(s) under nuts if necessary.

(6)  
Remove ratchet buckles, shoring, ball roller mats and supporting timbers from airplane.

(7)  
Connect fore-aft restraint braces to tank structure sides. Use crow's foot adapter to tighten nuts on attaching bolts.

(8)  
Install plumbing and equipment (Ref Chapter 28, Fuel).

(9)  
Connect cavity drain flex hose.

(10)
Install sump drain shroud.

(11)
Install electrical connectors in fuel system equipment bay and connect ground wires and bonding jumpers to tank.

(12)
Seal exterior of cavity at fuel and vent fittings as required (Ref Chapter 51, 43 Section Sealing Index and Requirements).

(13)
Install passenger floor panels, carpets and seats removed for tank access (Ref Chapter 25, Interiors).

(14)
Check operation of auxiliary tank electrical equipment (Ref Chapter 28, Fuel).

(15)
Install fuel system equipment access panel.

(16)
Install cargo compartment vertical supports and panels (Ref Chapter 25-52 R/I).


CAUTION:  DO NOT LEAVE ANY EQUIPMENT BETWEEN TANK STRUCTURE AND AIRPLANE STRUCTURE.

5.  Removal/Installation Aft Auxiliary Fuel Tank
A.  Remove Auxiliary Fuel Tank
(1)  
Remove aft cargo door (Ref 52-31-0 R/I).

(2)  
Perform procedures as outlined in par. 2. thru 4.A.
