[5] The yaw damper engage switch and yaw damper warning annunciator are located on the flight control module on the forward overhead panel (P5)
Fig. 34-3 flight control module components
The yaw damper engage switch is used to engage the yaw damper system .The yaw damper warning annunciator indicates yaw damper system disengagement. The light is on when the system is disengaged. The yaw damper engage switch is a two position ,solenoid-held switch. The solenoid is controlled by the yaw damper engage logic. The solenoid holds the switch in the ON position. Place the yaw damper engage switch ON to engage the yaw damper. A switch in the IFSAU (integrated flight system accessory unit ) closes. This switch provides a ground to the holding coil of the engage switch. After a delay, a relay in the IFSAU energizes. This relay turns off the yaw damper warning annunciator and engages the system .
[6] Each component of the yaw damper system serves a function in the proper operation of the system. The yaw damper coupler and the rudder power control unit combine to move the rudder to correct dutch roll. The flight control module and the IFSAU combine to engage the system. The maintenance manual contains procedures for isolating troubles to the faulty LRU.
[7] If there is a reported problem, the minimum equipment list gives guidance on how to dispatch the airplane. Use the trouble shooting charts in MM (maintenance manual) chapter 22-12 to isolate the problem. The charts list common system troubles grouped as engage troubles and operation troubles. Find the trouble in the charts and then follow the isolation procedure. As required by the MM procedure, use yaw damper BITE to verify system operation. Yaw damper BITE exercises the complete system including moving the rudder to verify the system operation.
