AERO2K flight movement tool was developed as part of the European AERO2K project.
The general objective of AERO2K project was to develop and improve methodologies and
analytical tools that would facilitate novel and improved evaluations of aircraft emissions
on the global atmosphere by the establishment of a new database of global aircraft
emissions of priority pollutants. An extensive description of the project can be found in
“Global aircraft emissions data project for climate impacts evaluation” report (2000). The
main project outputs were:
A new civil air traffic movement database for 2002 based upon an entirely new approach.
Emissions inventories for pollutants (CO2, H2O, CO, SO2, NOx, particle number production
[volatile and non-volatile], HCs) from aircraft.
An inventory of flown distances.
A new 2025 emissions forecast.
An uncertainty analysis.

As part of AERO2K project, Eurocontrol Experimental Centre (EEC) was responsible for
AERO2K work package 2 (WP2), which deals with the compilation of a flight movement
database. WP2 was split up into 4 WP dealing respectively with a civil movement
database compilation, a military movement database compilation, a region-specific
studies (FSU/China) and a LTO (Landing/take-off) cycle study.

This document was prepared by EEC. It is only concerned with the development of the
civil movement module. Its purpose is to describe the AERO2K flight movement tool,
which delivers a civil flight movement inventory of the world air traffic that can be included
into the AERO2K software application produced by Qinetiq, leader of the AERO2K
project. This software should calculate the quantity of emissions released by an aircraft at
an altitude and in a geographic area.

The development of the AERO2K flight movement tool was an iterative and evolving
process that progressed in function of:
The collection of data.
The update of the database.
Data verifications.

AERO2K flight movement tool was then planned and implemented such that the input
data were automatically read, processed and stored. The development of AERO2K flight
movement tool followed four phases:

PHASE 1  Design and initial development of AERO2K flight movement prototype for a sample data set using an Access database.  tool 
PHASE 2  Implementation of AERO2K flight movement tool into an Ordatabase.  acle 
PHASE 3 PHASE 4  Data sampling. Delivery of the flight movement inventory. 

Phases 2 and 3 were carried out in parallel.
The purpose of this document is to describe how the AERO2K flight movement tool was
developed and implemented.

Within AERO2K project, the final database was defined as a set of three modules namely
flight movement, fuel and emission. All the modules produced by the different work
packages were required to be compatible with each other. Within the flight movement
module, the system requirements were expressed in terms of:
