dehydrator plug (reciprocating engine preservative device). A transparent plastic tube filled with a
desiccant agent, such as silica gel, and an indicator, such as cobalt chloride.
One end of the tube is sealed, and the other end is fitted with a perforated plug and threaded so
that it can be screwed into a spark plug hole.
When the air inside the cylinder is dry, the indicator dye is blue, but if moisture gets into the
cylinder, it is absorbed by the silica gel, and the indicator changes its color to pink.
deicer. A system or component used to remove ice from a surface. Deicers must not be confused with
anti-icers, which prevent the formation of ice. Deicers remove ice after it has formed.
deicer boots (aircraft deicing component). Inflatable rubber boots attached to the leading edges of the
wings and empennage of an airplane. Compressed air is pumped into tubes in the boots to inflate them in a
timed sequence.
Ice is allowed to form over these boots while they are deflated, and when they inflate, they break
the ice from the surface, and the airflow carries it away.
deicing fluid. A fluid that is heated and sprayed onto an aircraft being prepared for takeoff in conditions of
freezing temperature and snow.
Most deicing fluids contain a form of glycol, with thickeners added to hold the glycol to the
surface. These fluids remove the ice and then stick to the surface and prevent the formation of more ice.
deka, or deca. The metric prefix that means ten. The prefix deka or deca is often used before such terms as
meter (dekameter, or decameter) or liter (dekaliter, or decaliter).
delamination. A separation of the layers of a laminated material. Plywood is made up of layers, or
laminations, of wood glued together. When the glue weakens, the layers can separate and the plywood is
said to be delaminated.
Delamination of bonded composite materials causes the materials to lose strength.
“Delay indefinite [reason, if known] expect further clearance [time]” (air traffic control). A phrase
used by ATC to inform a pilot when an accurate estimate of the delay time and the reason for the delay
cannot immediately be determined. Such delays could be a disabled aircraft on the runway, terminal or
center area saturation, or weather below landing minimums.
delay time (air traffic control). The amount of time an arriving aircraft must lose to cross the meter fix at
the assigned meter fix time.
This is the difference between actual calculated landing time (ACLT) and the vertex time of
arrival (VTA).
delivery air duct check valve (pressurization system component). An isolation valve at the discharge
side of the air turbine that prevents the loss of cabin pressurization through a disengaged cabin air
compressor.
delta (Δ). One of the Greek letters which has a common usage in technology to mean a change in
something. A small change is indicated by the lower-case letter delta (δ), and a larger change is shown by
the use of a triangle, the upper-case letter delta (Δ).
delta airplane. An airplane with a triangular-shaped wing. A delta wing has an extreme amount of

sweepback on its leading edge and a trailing edge that is almost perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the
airplane.
Δ CG (delta CG). A change in the center of gravity of an aircraft.
delta connection (electrical wiring connection). A type of connection used for three-phase
alternating-current generators, motors, and transformers. Two of the phase windings are in series, across
the third phase winding.
The term delta connection comes from the symbol for this type of connection, which is drawn in
such a way that it shows the windings arranged in the form of a triangle, or delta. The current flowing
between any two leads in a delta-connected circuit is 1.73 times the current flowing in any single winding.
delta hinge (helicopter rotor hinge). A hinge at the root of a helicopter rotor blade. The axis of the delta
hinge lies in the plane of rotation of the blade, and allows the blade to flap up or down to equalize the lift
produced by the rotor system as the helicopter moves through the air.
delta iron. The molecular arrangement in iron at temperatures between 1,392°C and 1,538°C. Pure iron
melts at 1,538°C.
Δ P (delta P). Differential pressure.
delta wing (airplane wing configuration). A wing having a triangular shape — an extreme amount of
sweepback on the leading edge and a trailing edge that is almost perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of
the airplane. Delta wings are used on some supersonic airplanes.
demagnetize. To remove the magnetism from a piece of magnetized material. When a piece of material is
