Ditching, ctd… AFM 4-20-20
5. Check that all passengers have seat belts fastened. Distribute
pillows, coats, and blankets, with instructions to passengers to
place these items in front of their faces prior to impact. All loose
items are to be collected and stowed in the lavatory prior to
ditching. Instruct all passengers to remove shoes, loosen neckwear
and collars, and adjust seat upright. All available fluids, food,
flashlights and first-aid kits should be readied for removal.
6. Ditching configuration is landing gear up, wing flaps 39°, with final
approach speed 1.3 VS (VREF).
7. Establish a rate of descent of approximately 200 ft. per minute.
8. Depressurize cabin by use of ram air, manually shut outflow valve,
and silence landing gear warning horn by pulling TONE WARN
circuit breakers (#1: P, A-5; #2: P, B-5) or selecting minimum tone
volume for SPZ 8400 equipped airplanes.
NOTE: Ensure cabin differential pressure is zero (0) prior to entering the
water.
9. Power levers should be closed, airplane rotated to normal landing
attitude (airspeed approximately 1.25 VS), slightly nose up, and
contact made with water with minimum forward speed and at
minimum sink rate.
NOTE: At water entry, expect the airplane attitude to be approximately 7
to 8 degrees nose up. Airspeed at water entry should be just above stall
speed. This is to minimize structural damage following water contact.
10. When the airplane comes to a complete stop, pull both FIRE
handles, remove life rafts and any other survival equipment, and
abandon airplane immediately. Use all available exits if necessary;
but if possible, do not open the main or baggage compartment
doors as door sills may be below the waterline.
11. The airplane may be expected to remain afloat if it does not sustain
serious damage on landing.
