During starter re-engagements, the EEC quickly energizes and de-energizes the SAV solenoid to adjust the level of the servo air pressure to the SAV (pulse-width modulation). This controls the position of the SAV, and thus the speed of the starter. The EEC matches the speed of the starter to that of the engine to prevent crash re-engagements.

You can remove the filter element for inspection and cleaning.

ENGINE STARTING -STARTER

Purpose
The starter turns the main gearbox for starting or motoring the engine.The main gearbox turns the high pressure compressor (N2) shaft.
Physical Description
The starter is a single stage, axial flow, turbine air motor.
A quick attach/detach (QAD) ring attaches the starter to a QAD adapter on the aft face of the main gearbox. The starter has a pin (not shown) that aligns with a hole (not shown) on the QAD adapter flange.
Functional Description
Pneumatic power from the starter air duct turns the turbine air motor. The turbine air exhaust then goes out through the exhaust deflector baffles.
The starter uses reduction gears and a clutch mechanism to turn the output shaft.
A speed sensor on the upper right side, sends a starter speed signal to the EEC.

ENGINE STARTING -STARTER SERVICING

General
The starter oil system operates independently from the engine oil system. It has these parts:

Oil fill port plugs

*
Overflow drain plug

*
Pressure fill plug

*
Oil level sightglass

*
Magnetic probe.

You open the fan cowls and thrust reversers to get access to the starter.
Oil Plugs
You remove the right oil fill port plug and the overflow drain plug when you add oil to the starter. You gravity-fill the starter until oil goes out of the overflow drain port.
You cannot pressure-fill the starter, so the pressure fill plug always stays installed.
You do not use the oil fill port plug on the left side of the starter because there is no easy access to it.
Oil Level Sightglass
The oil level sightglass shows the level of oil in the starter. The oil level shows differently for the left and right engines because of wing dihedral. You do not use the sightglass for any servicing operations.
