In general, these elements correspond to the two dimensional (2D) RNAV functions implemented in most commercial aircraft. The Advanced Flight Management System (FMS) defined in ARINC Characteristic 702A includes expanded navigation
functions such as flight plan performance predictions, vertical (VNAV or 3D) guidance, speed control/autothrottle, required time of arrival (RTA or 4D) guidance,
navigation data base processing and electronic map generation. Simplified geometric vertical (3D) guidance may be provided by systems that do not have the
