SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION 
Welcome to Honeywell’s next generation weather radar system, the RDR-4000.  The RDR-4000 introduces several new technologies not found in current generation Radar Systems.  Some of the major operational differences are highlighted here. 

 
RDR-4000 OPERATIONAL ENHANCEMENTS 
One of the first things you will notice is that the tilt control has been eliminated.  The system automatically controls the antenna scan, collecting weather and terrain information and storing it in a three-dimensional (3D) volumetric memory that is continuously updated and compensated for aircraft movement.  The scanned volume is from the nose of the aircraft out to 320 nm and from the ground to 60,000 feet.  This is the first key concept.  Rather than simply displaying a conventional plan view slice along the radar beam, the RDR-4000 stores a complete 3D picture (azimuth, range, altitude, and reflectivity) in memory.  The memory relieves the pilot of the workload associated with tilt management for weather detection.  The control panel provides for completely independent selections of range, gain, and mode, allowing the pilots to concentrate on the task of storm cell threat analysis and avoidance.  The RDR-4000 incorporates an internal terrain database to remove ground clutter in weather modes, and to remove weather returns in the ground map mode.  Ground map mode provides an extended ground map picture by piecing together individual scans and combining them in the memory for display.
