5.2.1 Technical characteristics
5.2.1.1 Emergency locator transmitters (ELT) shall
operate on 121.5 MHz. The frequency tolerance shall not
exceed plus or minus 0.005 per ccnl.
5.2.1.2 The emission from an EJdT under normal
conditions and attitudes of the antcnna shall he vertically
polarized and cssentially omnidirectional in the horizonla1
plane.
5.2.1.3 Over a period of 48 hours of continuous operation,
at an operating temperature of minus 2D°C, the peak effective
radiated power (PERP) shall at no time bc less than 50 mW.
5.2.1.4 The type of ertiission shall be A3X. Any othcr
typc of modulation that mects the requirements of 5.2.1.5,
5.2.1.6 and 5.2.1.7 below may bc used provided that it will not
prejudice precise location of the bcacon by homing equipment.
Note.- Sorne ELTs are eqrripped with cLn optional vice
capubilrty (A3E) in addition to the A3X emissio?~.
5.2.1.5 Thc carrier shall he amplitude rnodulatcd at a
modulatipn factor of at least 0.85.
5 . 2 . . The modulatio~i applied to the camcr shall have a
minimum duly cycle of 13 per cent.
5.2.1.7 Thc emission shall have a distinctive audio
characteristic achieved by amplitude modulating (he carrier
with an audio frequency sweeping downward ovcr a range of
not lcss than 700 Hz within the range 1 600 Hz to 300 Hz and
with a sweep repctition rate of between 2 Hz and 4 Hz.
5.2.1.8 After 1 January 1000, the emission shall include a
clearly defined carrier frequency distinct from the modulation
sideband cornponenls; in particular, at leas1 30 per cent or the
power shall be contained at all tirnes within plus or minus
30 Hz of the carrier frequency on 121.5 MHz.
