an average delay per movement of more than 10 minutes, with Istanbul Atatürk, Las
Palmas, Larnaca, Tenerife Sur, Ankara and Madrid having the largest average delay.
Compared with 2008, 10% of the busier arrival airports had an increase in their average
delay per movement, with the largest rises at Istanbul Atatürk (up 6 minutes), Ankara,
Tromso and Madrid (all 3 arrival airports up 1 minute).
At the other end of the scale, there were falls at Iraklion (down 7 minutes), London
Heathrow, Ibiza, Larnaca and Dublin (all 4 arrival airports down 5 minutes). All the airports
had a proportion of their traffic landing before their scheduled time, ranging from 20% at
Istanbul Atatürk to 59% at East Midlands.

All Causes Delay Situation for Airport pairs
In 2009 the most affected airport pairs (those with at least 2,400 reported flights per year)
were Geneva – London Gatwick, Rome Fiumicino – Bari, Frankfurt – Istanbul, Rome
Fiumicino – Palermo, Rome Fiumicino – Catania, Rome Fiumicino – Madrid, Bari – Rome
Fiumicino and London Gatwick – Geneva. Compared with 2008, 25% of the airport pairs
had an increase in their average delay per movement, with 5% having a rise of more than 3
minutes. The largest increases were between Bari – Rome Fiumicino (up 7 minutes),
Istanbul Atatürk – Izmir, Geneva – London Gatwick (both airport pairs up 6 minutes),
Antalya – Istanbul Atatürk, Rome Fiumicino – Bari, Rome Fiumicino – Palermo, Izmir –
Istanbul Atatürk, Istanbul Atatürk - Ankara, Istanbul Atatürk - Adana and Adana – Istanbul
Atatürk (all 7 airport pairs up 5 minutes).
At the other end of the scale, there were decreases between Copenhagen – Amsterdam,
Amsterdam – Copenhagen, London Heathrow – Stockholm, Geneva – London Heathrow
(all 4 airport pairs down 8 minutes), Brussels – London Heathrow, London Heathrow –
Edinburgh, London Heathrow – Glasgow, Stockholm – London Heathrow, Vienna – London
Heathrow, Amsterdam – Oslo, London Heathrow – Aberdeen and London Heathrow –
Geneva (all 8 airport pairs down 7 minutes).

All Departure Delay Causes grouped by IATA codes (Primary & Reactionary Delay)
An analysis of the delay codes and categories (grouped by IATA codes) shows increases
(in percentage points) in the Weather (other than ATFM) category followed by Reactionary,
Restriction at Departure Airport, Passenger & Baggage and Technical & Aircraft Equipment
categories and decreases in the Reactionary, Others, ATFM En-Route Demand/Capacity,
Cargo & Mail and ATFM Restriction at Destination Airport categories (see complete list of
standard IATA codes in Annex 2).
Focusing on the primary departure delay causes, the most penalising direct delay
categories were Technical & Aircraft Equipment with 21%, Weather (other than ATFM),
Restriction at Departure Airport and ATFM En-Route Demand/Capacity, all 3 categories
with 9% of the delay, Passenger & Baggage, Aircraft & Ramp Handling, both categories
with 8% of the delay.
