15.2 On-the-Job Training Instructor (OJTI)
The OJTI licence endorsement entitles the holder to supervise Student or Trainee Air Traffic Controllers who are undergoing on-the-job training.
As an OJTI you may only supervise training on a sector or operational position for which you hold a unit endorsement. You are responsible for the Air Traffic Control service that your student or trainee controller is giving.
The organisation that provides the Air Traffic Services at your unit is responsible for ensuring that you are competent as an OJTI. Your competence as an OJTI must be formally assessed at least once every three years.
15.3 Examiner
To become an ATC Examiner you must successfully undertake an approved ATC Examiner training course. There are two types of examiner, as follows: a) Unit ATC Examiners take part in rating and unit endorsement examinations; and b) Unit Competence Examiners assess controllers for ongoing competence for the renewal of unit endorsements.
16 Additional Ratings and Endorsements
16.1 Rating
To be granted an additional rating to an ATC licence, you will have to successfully complete an approved course of initial training in that rating at an ATC training centre.
16.2 Rating Endorsements
16.2.1 The initial training courses conducted at the ATC training centre will also contain initial training for some of the rating endorsements, as follows:
a) the Aerodrome Control Instrument rating course provides initial training for the Tower, Ground Movement and Air Control rating endorsements;
b) the Approach Control Surveillance rating course provides initial training for the Radar or ADS, and Surveillance Radar Approach rating endorsements; and
c) the Area Control Surveillance rating course provides initial training for the Radar or ADS rating endorsement.
16.2.2 Initial training for other rating endorsements is as follows: a) the Special Tasks rating endorsement will be conducted at RAF Shawbury; b) the Terminal Control, Offshore, Aerodrome Radar and Ground Movement
Surveillance rating endorsements will be part of the unit training plan; and
c) the Oceanic Control rating endorsement will be conducted as part of the unit training plan at the Scottish and Oceanic Area Control Centre.
Your ATC licence will also act as a Student Air Traffic Controller licence to enable you to train under the supervision of an OJTI in any rating and/or rating endorsement.
As with the Student ATC licence, before you undertake OJT you must have successfully completed an approved initial course of ATC training in the rating or rating endorsement you will be using to provide the ATC service. When using your ATC licence as a Student ATC licence you will be known, and referred to in this text, as a "Trainee Air Traffic Controller".
16.3 Rating Examinations for additional Ratings and/or Rating Endorsements
Examinations for the issue of additional ratings and/or rating endorsements will be conducted by a CAA Inspector and a unit ATC examiner, or by a CAA Inspector only.
The additional rating and/or rating endorsement will always have a unit endorsement associated with it.
16.4 Examinations for additional Unit Endorsements
These are examinations for unit endorsements on additional sectors or operational positions for which the controller already holds the appropriate ratings and any rating endorsements.
Unit endorsement examinations are conducted by a CAA Inspector and a unit examiner, or by a CAA Inspector only.
Where specifically authorised by the CAA, a unit endorsement examination may be conducted by two unit examiners, one of whom must be authorised by the CAA to be responsible for the conduct of unit endorsement examinations.
