The pilot’s walkaround and interior checks are outlined in the following procedures. The pre.ight check is not in-tended to be a detailed mechanical inspection. The pre.ight order is a recommended sequence only. The expanded sub-steps do not need to be memorized or accomplished in or-der. The steps that are essential for safe helicopter opera-tion are included. The pre.ight may be made as comprehensive as conditions warrant at the discretion of the pilot.
8.10 BEFORE EXTERIOR CHECK (FIGURE 8-1).

Do not pre.ight until systems are safe, switches off, safety pins installed and lock-ing levers in locked position.
1. Publications -Check; required forms and pub-lications, and availability of operator’s manu-al(s) (-10) checklist (-CL).
*2. Helicopter covers, locking devices, tiedowns, and grounding cables -Removed and secured.
*3. Fuel -Check quantity as required.
4. Fuel sample -As required. Check for contami-nation before .rst .ight of the day and after adequate settling time after cold refueling, or if fuel source is suspected contaminated.
8.11 EXTERIOR CHECK.
Exterior walkaround diagram is shown in Figure 8-1.

8.12 NOSE SECTION (AREA 1). d. Landing gear support fairing and step -Check.


Do not de.ect main rotor blade tips more than 6 inches below normal droop posi-tion when attaching tiedowns. Do not tie down below normal droop position.
*1. Main rotor blades -Check.
2. Fuselage -Nose area, check as follows:
a.  Windshield and wipers -Check.
O  b. Blade deice OAT sensor, FAT indicator probe(s) -Check.


Ensure avionics compartment door is closed and latches are secure prior to se-curing the FLIR door.
c.  Avionics compartment -Check equipment as required; secure door.


Optical lens of FLIR is easily scratched. To avoid damage, use cleaning procedures and supplies referenced in the mainte-nance manual.
d. FLIR  -Check condition (remove locking pin).
. Landing and searchlights -Check.

8.13 COCKPIT -LEFT SIDE (AREA 2).
1. Cockpit area -Check as follows:
a.  
Cockpit door -Check.

b.
Copilot seat, belts, and harness -Check.

c.  
FM homing antenna -Check.


e.
Position light -Check.

f.
Main landing gear -Check.


*f.1 Drag beam -Check.
Og.


HSS,
VSP, ejector rack locking levers locked, fairings, and external tanks -Check; refueling caps secure.

h.
Ambient sense port -Check. *2. Left engine oil level -Check.

 

8.14 CABIN TOP (AREA 3).
1. Cabin top -Check as follows:
a.
Left engine -Check inlet.

b.
Left pitot tube -Check.

c.  
Control access -Check .ight controls, hy-draulic reservoir, and .lter indicators. Check tempilabels for safe indication and security. Check area.

d.
Control access cover -Close and check se-cured.

e.
Right pitot tube -Check.

f.
Right engine -Check inlet.

g.
Rescue hoist -Check.

h.
IRCM -Check.

i.
Antennas -Check.

 

2. APU -Check; oil level, use dipstick.
O 3. APU IPS -Check.

4.
Gust lock -Check.

5.
Main transmission -Check; oil level.


*6. Main rotor system -Check controls, dampers, head, and blades. BIMt indicators -Check for safe indication (yellow color).

8.15 INTERIOR CABIN (AREA 4).

1. Cabin -Check as follows:
a.  Fire extinguishers -Check.
b.
First aid kits -Check.

c.  
Pilot’s and copilot’s tilt-back release levers -Lock position.
