Purl 1 Annex I0 - Aero~iautical Telecornrnunicutions
2.4.3 TF,RMINATION OF EXTENDED SQUITTEll BROADCAST
If input to the register for a squitler type stops for 60 seconds, broadcast of that extended squitter type shall be discontinued until
data insertion is resumed. The insertion of altitude by the transponder satisfies the minimum requiremenl for continuing to broadcast
the airborne position squitter.
Note 1.- Until tirizcout, a squitter lype may con, tain an MEfield of all zeros.
Note 2.- Continaed transmission for 60 seconds is required so that receiving aircraft will know that the data source for the
message lzas been lost.
2.5 GENERAL FORMATTERMANAGER (GFM)
The general Cormatterlmanager (GFM) shall format messages for insertion in the transponder registers.
Note.- In addition to duh formatting, there are other tasks that are pe@or~ned by this function
2.5.1 NAVIGATIOSNO URCE SELECTION
The GFM shall be responsible for lhe selection of the default source for aircraft position and velocity, the commanded altitude
source, and for ihc reporting of the associated posilion and altitude errors.
2.5.2 LOSS OF INPUT DATA
The GFM shall be responsible for loading the registers for which it is programmed a1 the required update rate. If for any reason
data arc unavailable for a timc cqual to twice the update inlcrval or 2 seconds (whichever is greater), the GFM shall zero old data
(on a per field basis) and insen lhe resulting message into ihe appropriate register.
For register 0Sl6 and 0616, a loss of position data shall cause the GFM to set the format type code to zero as the means of indicaling
"no position daia" since all zeros in the lalitudellongitude fields is a legal value.
2.5.3 SPECIALPR OCESSlNE FOR FORMAT TYPE CODE ZERO
2.5.3.1 SIGNIFICANCE OF FORMAT TYPE CODE EQUAL TO ZERO
Format lype code 0 shall signify "no position informalion". This shall be used when the latitudellongitude information is not
available or invalid and still permit the reporting of baro altitude loaded by the transponder.
Note I.- Tlze principal use of this message is to provide ACAS thc ability to passively receive ultitude
Note 2.- Special handling is required for rl~ea irborne and suvace position messages because a CPR encoded val~reo f all zeros
in tlze latitude/longitude field is a valid value.
2.5.3.2 BROADCAST OF FORMAT TYPE CODE EQUAL TO ZERO
Format lype code 0 shall only be set by the following events:
I) An cxlended squitter register monitored by the lransponder (register numbers 0Sl6, 0616, 0716 and 0g16) has not been loadcd
by the GFM for 2 seconds. In this case, the transponder shall clear the cnrirc 56 bits of the register chai timed out. In thc
case of the airborne position register, the altitude subfield shall only be zcrocd if no altitude data are available. Transmission
of the extended squitter that broadcasts lhe timed out register shall itself stop in 60 seconds. Broadcast of this extendcd
squitter shall resume when the GFM begins to insert data into thc rcgister.

Annex 10 - Aeroriautical Telecom~nu~zicatio~is Volume I11
2) The GFM delerrnines that all navigation sources that can be used for the exlcnded squitter airborne or surface position
inessagc arc either missing 01. invalid. In this case, the GFM shall clear the format type code and all other fields ol tl~c
airborne or surface position message and insert this zeroed message in the appropriate register. This shall only be done once
so that the transponder can delect the loss of data insertion and suppress the broadcast of the related squitter.
Note.- In all of the above cases, a fol-mat ope code of zero contains a message of all zeros. The only exception is the airborrze
position format that may contain baronzetric altrtilde and survei[lance status data as set by the transponder: There IS no analogous
case jor the other extended squrtter message types, since a zero valcle in uny of the fields indicates no information.
2.5.3.3 RECEP~ONO F FORMAT TYPE CODE EQlirlL Ti? ZERO
If a squitter with a format lype code equal to zero is received, it shall be checked to see if the altitude is present. If the altitude is
not present, the message shall be discarded. An extended squitter containing format type code zero shall only be used to update
the altitude of an aircraft already in track.
2.5.4 WNSPONDER CAPABILITY REPORTING
The GFM shall be responsible for setting the transponder capability register numbers and to 1C16. It shall also clear
individual bits in register number 1716 in the event of a loss of a data source or an application.
A particular bit shall remain set if at least one field in ihe corresponding register message is being updated.
